Lost my VTEC virginity today
There was an accident on a local freeway. Traffic was a bit backed up across all three lanes. As the accident approached, cars were being let through a few at a time. There I was at 614mi on the odometer and when I got out in the clear I let her rip. Nice open freeway with very few cars. I can not believe this car!
The VTEC experience reminds me a lot of the old Holley four-barrel carburetor on a V-8. This carburetor ran on two barrels around town or under light loads. When you floored it, however, the other two larger barrels would kick in for an extra punch in the backside. That's what VTEC reminds me of in the stook once you hit 6-grand; an extra kick in the backside. It is glorious!
Like the jump to hyperspace...except better.
Remember that the VTEC design means the S2000's engine has more torque at 4000 RPM AND more torque at 8000 RPM than a non-VTEC engine of similar displacement. So, with VTEC we get the best of both worlds: more torque at low and high rpm, more horsepower AND more fuel efficiency from the same power plant.
....judging from my '93 Prelude VTEC, Honda's first VTEC engine in the USA.

The Prelude engine was not the first VTEC engine in the States. The first VTEC in the states was the NSX, 1991 model year.
There was also a version of VTEC in a 1.6 liter engine as well, but the details escape me right now.

Ooops Meat, I stand corrected! You are right, at least about the NSX.
I think the '93 Prelude VTEC was the first VTEC engine in the USA in a "Honda" as opposed to an "Acura" but we both know that the Honda/Acura split is just a marketing ploy and only exists here in the USA.
There might have been an Integra 1.6 VTEC before the Prelude or at the same time. I'm not sure.
I'm pretty sure the Civic 1.6 VTEC didn't come until '94 and was tuned for high efficiency rather than performance. I think Accords first got VTEC in '94.
Thanks for the correction though. I appreciate that. Gosh, I wish I had a '91 NSX.

I think the 1.6l engine that I'm thinking of was in the delSol, which I think is now basically the same motor as the Civic Si.
There were also VTEC engines in the '92 and '93 2nd generation Integra GSR's.
Let's also not forget about the Honda F1 cars that were using VTEC (I think) in the early 90's.
This is all getting to be along time ago - time flies when your at redline!!!
