Default Loud clunk/snap from rear while driving off.

Haven't driven the car for over a week, it's been below freezing.
I go and start the car, listen to music for a couple of minutes, then decided to do a semi quick start, reving a little high and taking off. While doing so, this loud clunk like metal snapping comes from the rear. It was quite loud, and seem to come from the differential? Anybody experienced this before. My guess is i reversed back into the garage and the gears were still in the reverse direction, when i decided to take off aggressively...the gears changed direction a little too quickly and smacked into each other??? I guess i forgot to preload/roll forward before taking off a bit hard. The car still drives fine...hope this wasn't too confusing to read.

Just wondering if anyone experienced this....it was a scary sound.

Sounds more like stuck brakes - you probably set the parking brake when the discs were wet or there's enough humidity where you are that the rotors rusted and/or froze around the pads. That snap was them breaking free. Its nothing to worry about, but you shouoldn't use the e-brake when its cold out like that.

thanks, that makes sense. I was struggling in snow before i got into the garage.
The E-brake has been up ever sicnce then.

I'll use objects to keep the car from rolling and just leave the gear in nuetral and e-brake off.

Just leave it in gear, that is fine.

P.S. You should avoid stressing your differential like so when the gear oil is thicker than molasses. Its SAE 90. It'll take a while to warm up.
