Is low torque a problem?
Hi Folks,
I am looking to buy a roadster of some type and have narrowed it down to 2, the S2000 or Audi TT ( sorry for blasphamey on your boards
)
The S2000 is the favoured at the mo as it looks awesome.
I apologise for being a complete newbie but I would appreciate any comments on the following issues.
Is the low torque a problem?
What mods are possible to solve this problem? the majority of threads on the forum recommend a SC or TC, but would this effect the lack of mid range power?
Finally what does VTEC do? I know its the valve timing and it makes a big difference as can be seen from the dyno results scattered about, but why not have it on all the time as opposed to activating it at 6000rpm?
Thanks in advance.

Feel free to do a SEARCH for TORQUE, you will find a lot of stuff posted, and yes this subject has been beaten to death, and pardon our sensitivity.
Some rag about it all the time, others don't seem to care and others think it is fine.
The S2000's engine is a high RPM beast. The car was not designed to be a drag strip winner, more like a road course champion. Bottom line- other than from a dead stop, the secret to this car is knowing how to shift and I mean REALLY knowing how to shift, heal-toe should be an innate skill. If you have these skill sets or are willing to develop them and you want more power - drop to a lower gear and get on the throttle. Believe me the grin will overcome your face when the Tiger gets out of the cage at VTEC!

VTEC means that the cam has two sets of lobes basically, one for lower RPM operation and one for higher RPM operation. VTEC engages at 6,000 RPM's and is very noticable, especially on a dyno. The 'lack of torque' is greatly exaggerated on this car, it drives very much like any other Honda in the lower RPM's. My car is one of the first turbocharged and it basically fills all of the voids present in the powerband. The turbo comes on very smoothly around 3000 RPM's and the car pulls very hard to redline, VTEC is no longer noticable. Even stock the car is very impressive and once it's broken in, I don't think you'll have any complaints. I would suggest that you drive one if you haven't already, it's very different from the Audi. The Audi is much more luxury oriented whereas the S2000 is much more of a sports car. Good luck with your decision.
I have never thought bottom end grunt was an issue with this car. If I cared about pavement wrinkling torque, I would have bought a 'Vette or SS Camaro! The S2000 is extremly tractable around town and when you want to GO, just rev the piss out of it!
Is low torque a problem?
Yes, low torque is a problem ... so it's a good thing that the S 2000 doesn't have low torque
. I defy you to find any other 2.0 liter normally aspirated engine that has higher torque and such a flat torque curve.
The Audi and the Honda have very different driving dynamics. Drive both and buy the one that makes you
the most.

Hi, first post... but I just went to the Honda website about the s2000 and they had a small quicktime movie that said the VTEC uses 3 sets of lobes, for low, mid, and high rpm.
