I believe that the Maintenance required light is set to activate at scheduled intervals and if you miss a particular maintenance interval or the person performing the maintenance neglected to reset this counter it will activate.

It is easily reset. I forget the exact procedure. Do a search on this site or perhaps someone who remembers can post it again here.

You need an oil change (and other maintenance) when you need an oil change. You should not be relying upon a "mileage counter" to tell you when you need an oil change. You should know what catagory of schedule your car belongs in and you should know when the oil was changed last based on your record keeping.
That blinking light you see is an "idiot light". You did read your owner's manual, right?

Just go through the reset process (in the manual) and change the oil at the required intervals.

Mine went off while I was driving to work today in the Insight. I reset it when I got to work.

My last oil change was 3000 miles ago , i used mobil 1 synthetic do i need an oil change at every 3000miles with this oil. The guy put the sticker on my car and its says 3000 mile oil change and im 200 miles away from that , so i still have a lil while , is that why the maint req light flashed and should i get an oil change so soon with synthetic ? iv read the manual and it sounds weird that its flashing now at 31500 miles.
