S2000 Talk Discussions related to the S2000, its ownership and enthusiasm for it.

Make sense to sell current s2000 for a newer one?

I think you make a good case for upgrading, but that would be it. 06-09 not any real changes, but I'd only look at 08-09 models. If you already had an 06+ I'd say not to do it, but you'd be getting dbw, stability control, some other changes by doing so.

I can't think of any reason to get an NSX over an S2000 other than looks.
Just for the fun. The NSX is a very different car

I would do it if you've got another car so you can sell this one privately and take your time to buy the new one. The lost $ on trading in would be worse than looking at a big number on the odometer.

Yup I have a TSX as a daily so I don't need to rush it.

I'm planning on shopping around this winter when prices are low, find the perfect s2000, put a down payment and borrow the rest from my credit union (2.99% APR on used cars) then sell my s2000 in spring when prices/demands rise and pay off the newer s2000.

Gives me time to find the "perfect" s2000, and I can take advantage of the seasonal price fluctuations in both buying and selling. Also, I'd have both s2000s in my possession for a few months, so I can take my time swapping my aftermarket parts over.

Just going by KBB private-party values as a rough estimate:
'04 91k fair condition: $10,640
'06 25k good condition: $19,600

So you'll be spending nine-grand (plus $1372 sales tax) to get... cleaner paint? A few less squeaks that can be fixed yourself or with trip to the dealership?

Doesn't seem worth it to me.

Of course, real-world prices could be different - the price difference could be less if you find the exact right seller and buyer. But even if the difference were only four grand, I still wouldn't do it. Maybe this isn't you, but I wonder if you're just hitting a seven-year-itch thing, especially since you're looking to replace like with like. If you wanted to replace the S2000 with a four-seater or some such, sure, go for it if that's what you need. I suspect, though, that you're just getting slightly bored with the S, and getting a new one won't fix that. Now that you have a daily driver though, every time you get into the S you'll have a better perspective on how great a car it is, and you won't feel any need to trade it in on another S.

Your scenario sounds so much like what I went through last fall that it's almost scary.

I had a CTSC'd 2001. It was my DD for 6+ years and was starting to show it's age a bit. About 2.5 years ago I bought a WRX for a DD (wanted AWD for the winters out here in CO), so the AP1 became my toy. The AP1 had some dings and probably needed a paint job (I wanted to start showing it)....so instead of spending $6k or so on paint and body work, I put that money toward a low mileage AP2.

I found an '04 with 22k miles on it out in Vegas last September. Flew out, bought it, drove it back home. Spent the next 6 months or so pulling all the aftermarket parts off the AP1 and returning it to stock so I could sell it.

All in all, it was more work than I originally thought it would be....but I am much, MUCH happier with my low mileage AP2. No squeaks, rattles or noises....just feels more solid than my higher mileage AP1.

I don't think you're crazy for thinking about doing this (unless I'm crazy as well). In the long run I think you'll enjoy trading up just as I did.

Take your AP1, buy a 2.2L engine and dash cluster. Bingo, you'll be looking at whatever that odometer reads.

If you sell your old AP1 engine, you'll be out less than $1000 if you do the labor yourself.

BTW, I don't think it's silly. We picked up an AP2 and kept the modded AP1. As the cars get more "worn" they "graduate" from daily driver to autocross car to track car... where the interior and exterior blemishes add more character rather than causing pain.

imo, there is a timelessness to it. when i bought the car 4 years ago, same as i my sentiment now: i will NEVER ger rid of it (it being s2k.. not the exact car )

its not a flavor of the week-- a 330, g coupe, a z roadster.... with many iterations and a long life.

when the S came out it was unique. today it is still unique. and its gone. there is no S3000 (as much as people would love to speculate)

in 20 years from now, i know ill still want to own it. and so i do. not the one i have with scratched out head lamps and bumper-fender gap and cracked roll hoop cover. a cleaner one

If your current S is garage furniture, just keep it... I agree Elistan, you're gonna spend around 7k for the swap. IMO, I would spend the 7k on a fox body mustang, boat, invest in my IRA, house mods etc... I go to cars and coffee often and see these low mileage sports cars, they look very 'unused" to me. Drive the Sh#t out of yours, get the front bumper painted and save 7k. Unless you're wealthy, doesn't make much sense.
