I'm curious, does the CF hood and trunk affect the crashworthiness of the car?

Keep in mind that the S2k hood is made of very thin, lightweight aluminum. It already will not handle much in a crash.

Good question.

The answer lies in the innate qualities of CF. Many of us know that CF lighter and much stronger than its peers, but we must also realize its great energy absorbing value.

The decrease in vehicle mass that CF brings gives us more push to avoid those crashes to begin with. Not to mention savings on gas. It's $2.98/gal here in California!

I'm sorry for thread jacking here, but I thought an better explanation of carbon fiber was needed.

Carbon fiber in sheet form like it is in CF hoods, is not stronger than the stock aluminum or steel hoods. It is just usually lighter.

The only way that carbon fiber is stronger than material such as steel, is when the carbon fiber is constructed with some type of core like a honey comb core or a foam core. The core is then usually sandwiched on both sides by carbon fiber. Sometimes fiberglass materials are used as the core and this also can become stronger than steel or other metals.

But alone, as in CF hoods, CF is in no way stronger than steel or alumnium. Now at the ribs and edges where there are supports, it may be stronger, but this adds weight.
