Thanks, all, especially rschenk for the great brochure. And yes, Rick Hesel, it was indeed Maryland. The guy was reading the part about rubber worn off pedals to expose metal, as VTEXTC suggested.
The other failure was the rear tires, after 12.8K miles. I noticed the rear end was getting loose with increasing frequency, but hadn't crawled under to check recently, so I guess that was a good thing.

Michigan also has no inspection. You would think that would be a blessing but you should see the things that travel down our roads. Maybe inspection for cars older than 5 years would be appropriate. But then GM, Ford, and Chrsyler would cry foul since most of their cars have trouble passing most state inspections from day 1. Pathetic losers with miserable jobs who try to pull some power play irk me.
I can't believe that. From what I know, you can't sell a car in the US unless it has passed the regs in all states. In California it's worse because we have the pollution limits. Pedals? Can he legally do that? That seems like harrassment
