Default Md. inspector flunked my stock pedals!

I know this is sort of silly, but the guy who did my state inspection claimed that the metal pedals were illegal--no metal is supposed to show. I of course argued that they were stock, and that the foot could only contact the rubber nubs, not the metal. He was really just being a stickler, and said that he'd check by the local Honda dealer to see if they are really stock. In the meantime, anybody got any pictures of certifiably stock pedals I could show the guy?

Found this site that has a PDF of the Honda S2k brochure.
Good picture of the pedals.

Don't let the inspector see the "no" in www.honda.no. I would say "no" stands for the country, as does Canada's "honda.ca".

This site also mentions the textured metal foot pedals.

Just for the record, my '93 Mazda RX-7 had drilled aluminum pedals - no rubber nubs at all, just holes drilled through the pedals. The hole drilling was part of the overall image of weight savings. Mazda pictured the drilled aluminum pedals in their standard brochure. All that work to save a few grams, and then sell the car to a 220+ pound clod like me.

Just taking a stab in the dark here; what the inspector was referring to was the tendancy on older cars with conventional rubber pedal pads to show excessive wear over time. Of course, this could be dangerous with wet shoes, and exposed, smooth metal.

I'm not sure what he expects you to do; cover the pedal with rubber tacked on to it? I'm sure this dinosour of an inspector is a little behind with the times. If I'm not mistaken, a plethora of other new vehicles such as the Focus SVT, IS300, 350Z, not to mention the RX7 as stated above, all come with metallic type pedals.

I highly suspect that he passed your inspection irrespective of his own views. Failing that, I'm sure an appeal is warranted.

Cheers
Asif

Please, after he finds out that they are factory, make him feel as stupid as you possibly can. Not to be mean but things like this just really get me! People who have goverment provided jobs that need to display their power and authority over us-the average joe.

Let me guess. This was in Maryland, right?

I had a bitch of a time passing inspection in Maryland. I was flunked for the wave rotors, blue bulbs (they shine white, not blue, but he never bothered to check that), and my SuperSprint exhaust, which the inspector claimed was a straight-through "glass-pack."

The rules in our dear state are cleary the product of an MVA bureacracy gone mad. I finally found an inspector sympathetic to performance cars and performance mods that make the car more, not less, safe. He passed it with no problems

I hear ya, Rick.

I went through the same crap last week in my Outback for cryin out loud!

I had PIAA bulbs in the foglights that have an HID purplish/blue little tinge.

The inspector failed me for having non-white lights. I said, they are foglights - what about amber? He said they are "driving lights" and must be white, shows me in the inspector guidelines. So I say, Let's go to the parts dept and see what comes up. Off we march to the parts dept. It comes up as a foglight. So I say, what does the book say? He says clear or amber. I say that clear is not a color, and my bulbs ARE clear, just a slightly different hue, no different than yellow halogens vs. Sylvania Silverstars, which are DOT-approved and by the Va St. Police. The service writer sides with me, but it is not his call. Now the inspector is wrong, but is being hardheaded. Won't budge an inch.

So I buy two of the cheapest, autozone bulbs I can find, slap 'em in there, go back and get my sticker - 4 hours of my time wasted.

You should see the new S2000 ad in the Feb. Motor Trend pg. 58-59, it's a photo of the S2000 pedals in the footwell. (its actually pretty good, the captions over the pedals read "He loves me" "He loves me not" "He loves me" over the clutch, brake, and gas respectively.)

Perhaps you could take him a copy from the local newsstand....
