Jeffbrig,

you say its harmful if not double clutching to downshift into 1st gear...

what about not double clutching when downshifting into second, third or fourth? Is rev matching fine for these situations or will it also be harmful as it is harmful downshifting into 1st without double clutching?

Intrepid has it right. You're not going to "harm" anything. Virtually everything in the transmission is a wear item - but they take a long time to wear out. Aggressive downshifting puts more wear on the synchros, but they will withstand a TON of wear before they are 'worn out'. It's more a question of whether they last 100k miles of 200k+ miles, if you know what I mean. Downshifting to 1st gear is especially problematic because of the large gap between 1st and 2nd gear ratios, a larger difference than between other sequential gears.
