Default Methods of shifting.

I wanted some of you experienced guys to jump in on this one. I use my S as a daily driver and I wanted some tips on getting better mpg. Is less throttle or less RPM better for saving gas? Things like this is what I'm curious about, or how far to take each gear before shifting. Thanks...gas is just too pricey for careless driving.
Feel free to mention certain techniques or strategies for city and highway driving.

I do drive the '04, just in case your going to throw some RPM ranges at me.

Both less throttle and less rpms are good for getting better mpg. Also try not to be to heavy when you accelerate , do it at a nice steady pace. I average around 25 city/ hwy depending on conditions. If im doing all freeway traveling i can get up to 27-30 mpg.

That said you drive a high performance sports car man! Drive it like you stole it!!! j/k

For most of my driving, on crowded roads, I throttle gently and shift around 4000rpm. This gives me 27-29mpg on a regular basis (with a lot of highway mixed in).

1. Be easy when starting from a stand still.
2. Accelerate and decelerate as gently as possible.
3. Let off the gas early when slowing down for a red light or stop sign. This also goes a long way toward the life of your brakes!

If you want a good recommendation as to what rpm's to shift at? Try reading your owners manual. Honda gives recommended shift points to maximize economy. I've found that they're very reasonable for this car. Give em a try while bearing 1 thru 3 above in mind!

Drive Safe,
Steve R.

Life is to short to shift at 4000 rpm.

look at the big picture, a few miles per gallon for fun is worth every penny.

Then sell the car and buy a Prius.

Good gas mileage is lame. Anything over 10mpg is slacking off.

I enjoy spirited driving on ocassion, but sometimes I prefer the efficiency (MPG) of my S. The split personality is part of the beauty of the S2K. Although it takes some of the excitement out of driving, I've found that coasting, in neutral, up to stop signs, red lights and slow traffic adds a couple of miles per gallon in city driving. If you you coast wisely and plan ahead, it doesn't require require any more aggressive braking than normal driving and provides an opportunity to gain new insight into the superior engineering of the S.
