Default Miata more fun?

Haven't posted on this site for a while...

I had an 01 s2k new a while ago and ultimately had to sell it after 2 years because I needed more money for my business. Anyway, I drove one of my employee's Miata, a '94 I think, and it was one of the most fun cars I ever drove.

It never felt nervous like the back was gonna come around on me. Dunno, it felt more sure footed than my s2k ever did. I could def. feel the limits on the car - or felt like I could control the car when it hit the limit.

Do other s2k driver's share the same feeling? - think that a Miata is more fun in the twisties or that it is a more rewarding car than a s2k.

Going fast is not that important - I have a EVO X for that.

Anyway, def. would like to buy a new roadster for the summer and was thinking either a miata or another s2k.

I have driven both and Miata is sure very fun to drive. However, it is also a underpowered car. If you are only interested in fun to drive and speed does not matter to you at all. Go for the Miata.

If you want a car that can get around the track fast, get the S2

I had both a 2001 S2K and a 1999 Miata. I could never get over the fact that the Miata felt like it was put together with spit and tissue paper. Slamming the door always made me feel like something was going to fall off the car.

There's no comparison. The S2K is a better car in every way.

The Miata is definitely more forgiving at the limit, and thus easier to drive fast. The new facelifted ones look great too!

I don't understand why people always say this. How is a car with a shorter wheelbase and chassis rigidity of a wet noodle, more stable at the limit?

I think car stability has more to do with setup, tire choice, springs, bars etc. I have driven a few Miatas that were setup loose and would bite you just as much as any s2000.

Currently have a nicely setup '91 MX5 with a stock 1.6 engine, it's up for sale now, getting a stock AP1 S2000 within 1-2 weeks to replace it, and taking that to three track days that I've signed up for over the next 2 months. Will report back with my findings

Of course a Miata wont feel as scary. It has half the power of an S. The more power a car has, the "scarier" it becomes. Its all about your right foot and how far you want to push it down. The scariest car I ever drove was a AMG E55. Not because it wasnt planted, but because that power was so readily available and took you by surprise. After you get used to it and learn your own limitaions the fear goes away.

Stock for stock a miata has less snap oversteer compared to an S2000 - especially an early AP1 like the one you had. If all you are looking for is fun-to-drive, get the miata. I'd say the miata is on par with the S in that regard. The S just has the benefits of more power and is generally a nicer car (at least compared to NA or NB miatas. Those NC's are pretty refined but lose a bit in the fun-to drive category).

Let's see. A car that feels less powerful and less willing to move is more fun?

The Miata is for you, my friend!

Of course I'm biased, but Miatas are junk, and ugly to boot... the newer ones, not as much.

But if you don't think so and can put up with that, more power to you! You'll get to save a lot of cash!

This is just not true.

The Miata is a fun car, but for me, its too small to live with as a DD.
