Miata NC Driver - Please Instruct Me in S2000 Lore
Hey guys. I'll just add a quick 2 cents..
My neighbor has a newer Miata.. I'm not too keen on Miatas so I don't know the model year or trim package.. But I've always appreciated their track value.. Now she has taken me for a ride in it before and I must say it's a blast to ride in. She loves it and has owned several prior to this one.. I will ask her next time I see her the MY and such.. But anyways, once I decided to get my weekend warrior, she always asks to ride in my S now! I never have seen a problem in liking two things just as much. I drink Pepsi and Coke, I think the Iphone is just as cool as any Android..
There's just something about the feel of the S that I like more than the Miata. The power difference aside, I just get this warm and fuzzy being in my S2000.
When you guys talk about engine sound.. ohhhh man.. I just got a custom 3" single put on with a Magnaflow muffler and HO-LEE crap! When Vtec engages I just laugh.. She calls it the Beast2000.
If it's possible for you, TS, I would own both! If not, your decision to switch to the S will not be a bad one.
Just gotta do what makes you happy.. And that's what life is about anyway isn't it?
(oh and slam that thing passed 6k next time will ya!?)

I see the thread was revived… So as the OP, I will update on some news…
Ok, I never bought the S2000. I decided to hold on to the NC a little longer and find a nice NA Miata (90-97) to "learn" from the experience.
So, after many months, I found a beautiful and pristine 1995 NA.
For now, I will be running both cars. However, and quite interestingly, I find people being drawn to the NA just as much, if not more than the NC because it's "vintage" and in excellent shape.
I'll be running this combo for now. I'm pretty sure I will keep the NA for long as it's relatively cheap. If I ever decide to sell the NC, I will definitely consider the S2K.
Here's a pic of the NA:

Nice! There's just something about an NA that I just love. I can't quite put my finger on it. Ive had my S2000 for a long time, and for some strange reason, I enjoy driving my NA on track and on the street more than the S2000. I think it's cause I feel like I'm not suppossed to be having fun when I really am.
Great color choice btw, and those 14" RPF1 look awesome. Flat face FTW. Much better than the 15"s

Unfortuantely, Im selling it help pay for the build on our shop FR-S Im picking up this Friday.
Hi, I currently drive a 2011 Mazda MX-5 Miata NC... Basically, the more recent Miata with a little more power than the older ones. I like it. However, lately I've been curious about S2K's...
So, I drove one the other day... But being a test drive, with a 300 pound salesman in the passenger's seat, what I got back from the drive was quite limited... This is what I noticed:
1. The stock suspension in the S2K is better and stiffer. But that's something the MX5 can have with some aftermarket coilovers and sways.
2. The interior is better quality than the Miata and it looks really good inside. I really like the door cards. The steering wheel is nice, but I light the Miata's better. I don't like the gauge cluster in the S2K - At least not the first impression.
3. My MX5's engine sounds better I feel, smoother. However, the much prefer the feel and sound of the clutch, transmission and shifter in the S2K than the Miata.
4. The seats in the s2K are much better than those in the Miata, although I quite like the Miata's seats.
5. The S2k has more power than my NC, but it wasn't something of night and day. That said, the most I revved the S2K was 5,000 RPM... So I'm comparing 5,000RPM in the S2K to 5,000 RPM in the Miata.
6. While I like the S2K, I've heard a lot of people say the NC handles better in the corners than the S2K... I also like that a Miata NC is a bit more rare on the road than the S2K's.
While I like the car, I'm not sure it's worth the change from NC to S2K...
Now, what can you guys tell me? Please don't tell me about how Miatas are uncool and that they are girlie and what not. I'm well aware of the stigma... Please. talk to me about the facts and things I may not know when comparing the 2 cars.
Thanks.

2)The gauge is something you'll get used to and love soon enough. Its so easy to just glance at it and no exactly what rev you're at down to the hundreds. It actually feels weird for me to drive cars with traditional tachs now, every time i glance downwards the tach isn't there

3)The miata's engine is definitely smoother, but i find it not as "tight" feeling. The S2000 all around just sounds more down for business. You hear everything; the intake drawing air in, the gears, the diff. Its a little overwhelming at first but you start to appreciate it.
4)The S2000 seats aren't even that good :/ the RSXs have better holding seats.
5)Yes, under 5000RPM the car feels almost corolla like. But once you get it to 9000RPM, it is a Night and Day difference. Black and white, no doubts about it.
6)its personal preference here: but i think the S2000's design will age much better than the NC, NB or NA. The lines are just so damn sexy.

Stay in touch, let me know of your FRS project. I'd be happy to publish something about it on RallyWays. -D
My MX5's engine sounds better I feel
...after I read that ...I stopped reading
just read you only hit 5k ...now i know what you mean ...you have never heard an S2k hit V-tec ...then u never heard an s2k run period ...9k all the way , its intoxicating ....not a miata in the world can do that ...that being said ...if you think your car sounds good go really drive an S ...then lets talk

miatas are great, but for the few K more on the s2k i think you get more high end engineering, more progressive technology, more race inspired design. i think the miata cost a lot less new than the s did but prices have dropped for the s2k making it a much better value.
I love my S, but I have to argue this comment: The 04-05' Mazdaspeed Miata is as fun as my S, I own both. It's not as fast on top end, but 0-130 it is a blast, and still has the classic Miata feel and handling (after removing the stock Racing Harts and skinny tires). After intake and exhaust+ tune it will smoke an I/E/T S 0-100. I do like my S more, mainly because of the bad-ass engine note and 9k redline, but I won't knock on the MSM either. An NC Miata is a different story: I wouldn't own ANY NC, mods be damned. I can't stand the looks of the 06+ Miatas...
