Empty engine bay:

I took the motor to the shop and fully disassembled it today. The crank, rods, oil pump, etc are good. The sleeves, pistons, and head are not. It's going to the machine shop this week for new sleeves (overbore to 89mm), refurbishing of the head, and new 9:1 compression 89mm pistons. We'll probably lose 15-20hp from the compression but I'll just boost a bit more to compensate.

The goal is 2.1L 7-9lbs of boost and 280whp at 8000rpm (longevity). Stay tuned!
WoW. All that hard work to put that engine in. It just brings a tear to my eye to see it pulled out. And to think all that finger bashing =(

Instead of boring out that motor why not stroke it?

I know it would take new connecting rods and pistons but wouldn't it be easier than getting the other pistons?

I know the lower CR will allow for better boost but does this mean you are putting that 10lb pulley on? =)

So the bits of metal on the pistons were from the pistons themselves? Any idea why they self-destructed? Air/fuel perhaps?
The bits on the pistons were the two upper piston rings that fractured on cylinders 1, 2, and 3. The piston chunks seem to have blown out the exhaust valves and on to the cars behind me on the track

There is no need to stroke the motor as the crank and rods are good, with the supercharger it's easy to get as much HP as I want using boost. The reason we're boring is because CP stocks S2000 89mm 9:1 CR pistons and we have less than 3 weeks to get the car back together.

Also, since the block needs new sleeves it costs the same to do an 87mm bore or an 89mm. It doesn't make sense to leave it at the stock bore. I need to calculate how much boost I'm going to need and what size pulley we're using. The 5" stock pulley results in 4.5lbs at the MAP sensor which made 260hp at 9200, I'll need about 7lbs at the MAP to make ~300hp which means I'll be looking for a pulley between 4" and 4.5".

Fun fun..

We aren't sure. There is some evidence of detonation but my timing map was WAY more conservative than all of the local AEM tuned boosted S2000s so there may be some hidden parameter that caused this. We'll be combing through the tune soon to determine whether or not we have to scrap it and start over, we'll probably end up starting over due to the compression and pulley size changes.

This is a GREAT thread with lots of good pics.

I am totally impressed by your skills/talents and attention to detail.

The engine destruction is troubling.

Why did it occur? Were there any indicators leading up to piston parts coming out of the exhaust?

The experience you have had (you being infinitely more talented/skilled/experienced than I in these areas) is scary for someone like myself.

I would have no idea if 'joe tuner' did my car right, or did my car wrong (say if I wanted to add a turbo).

I understand there may be hidden parameters, or something not quite right in the tune, but if so, would there be other measurements, data streams, symptoms that would indicate a tune problem before catastrophic damage?

For someone like me (zero knowledge) how would a person even know if they were experiencing problems from a third party tune?

Is it simply a fact of life and chance one takes that a tuned car may just die and as such, it's part of the expectations and what a person has to pony up with that wants turbo?
