Moderators and uncalled for comments
I've done my best not to personally attack anyone on this board, regardless of my personal views. I've also tried to ignore anyone who DOES make such an attack, against me or anyone else.
However, some of these attacks have NO purpose whatsoever (like many of them ever DO). I'm not talking about someone making a stook mod comment and another disagreeing with their tastes, I'm talking about out and out nastiness for no apparent reason.
Moderators (Jay Li, cdthree, forgotten last moderator name), would it be possible to stop locking the threads and just remove the offensive comments? I'm not talking about editing line by line, but simply removing the entire reply from someone if they are out of line (i.e., ANY personal attacks).
There are some great threads on here and I hate to see them locked and started over simply because someone hasn't matured yet. If these people cannot behave themselves, revoke the account altogether.
Far be it from me to tell someone how to run their jobs, but this simple process of scolding and wrist-slapping isn't doing the trick. You know these people won't leave simply because we tell them "If you don't like it, don't come here!". They are all about the attack and the battle, not the victory.

I agree that there are some offensive comments that one can't hold back but respond. I used to but there's no point in doing so. I think the best thing to do is not to grace them at all with a response...kind of like dealing with immature children....they have a spat, you ignore them and they usually shut their traps.

Hi McGyver
Just read your post and reviewed the past 6 pages of posts. I came across 2 locked threads, one on the subject of air horns where a member went after Mingster, and another between Greg Stevens and ChrisS2000 who I understand was notorious for making provocative posts. I haven't noticed many locked threads since the first couple of days when one of the moderators appeared to have an "itchy" trigger finger. Things appear to have settled down. Am I missing something here?
My opinion (not that anyone asked) is that we're all big kids here and can take care of ourselves. It seems to me that locking threads should be a measure of very last resort, and that after moderators have thought twice about locking, they should think again. I also think that moderators should be even more cautious about deleting posts or threads, and that such action should be taken only as to posts which truly shock the conscience. I haven't seen any posts that would I think met this very high criteria for deletion.

You guys have to remember that everything is subjective. What Jay Li considers locking may not be offensive to me our you, etc. As far at Cthree goes - well he owns this board and can do whatever he pleases with it. It is free to us - therefore we have little or no say so on the final word. I would say this to you: If you find something that is displeasing to you, give the moderator a private message and discuss it that way (because you may not really be aware of what is going on behind the scenes). I think we all (as moderators) have tried really hard to be as non-judgemental as possible. I apologize if you think we are not holding up to your standards.
Though I agree that mean-spirited personal attacks have no place here and only serve to discourage open discussion, I would not be in favor of censorship. The offenders are free to be ignorant. It is by their ignorance that they will expose themselves as the moronic trolls they are. By thus exposing themselves, we will know to ignore them in the future.

I'm sorry I have to aggree, no censorship. I would like to see everyone behave themselves and keep this board what it is. If it does end up like the other board with mindless, meaningless, useless posts and personal attacks, I'll excercise my right to boycot and leave, just like I did the other board. This is a great place, let's keep it S2K please.
Let me clarify a couple of things:
1) The only time a post is locked or deleted now is if it is a personal attack.
If the offending user continues to misbehave - cthree will probably delete and lock the account. That's his say-so, he owns it.
2) The rest of the time the post is just moved to the appropriate forum.
I have not witnessed any other actions other than this lately. Anyone care to elaborate on the topic?
Thanks
Larry

Hi all,
Yesterday a member, now former member, engaged in a series of unprovoked personal attacks on other members. This will not be tolerated. No body needs to come here and be attacked and called names and abused. This member is gone and will not be returning and you can expect the same to happen in the future should this type of activity reoccur.
This is a big group and as a result of human dynamics, we will not all agree or even like eachother. That's OK, it's the way life works. What is important is how we deal with it. Abuse and harassment will get you banned. I will do this without a second thought. No member, no matter how prolific or insightful is more important than any other. Justice will be swift and without appeal. Simply being arrogant, ignorant, dislikeable or even snarky is not reason to ban someone. Like I said, you aren't going to like everyone.
As a rule, I don't censor posts unless they contain offensive material. I almost never delete posts as that disrupts the continuity of the thread. I will lock a topic if it degrades beyond the point of good taste. If you restart the topic in another thread and try to circumvent the lock, I will ban you. Don't do it. You are challenging my authority if you do so and that wont happen. All of the moderators have these instructions and I think they have made good decisions about how to execute them. They contact me through PMs and in the Board Room when they feel I should look at something out of the ordinary. The system runs pretty smoothly IMO. I will say that 90% of all locked threads are locked by me, not the moderators. They have all tried to settle the situations with tact and intellegence but sometimes I just have had enough of it. If anything, they don't take enough action and prefer to defer to me. So over moderation is really not an issue.
There is no S2000Chris. It was a joke and taken as such. I locked the thread simply to end the joke, further proliferation was unnecessary.
I just thought I should clear the air a bit since I don't get to explain this much outside of the group of moderators. If you have a problem, please do not hesitate to send a PM to me and the mods. It will get dealt with.
Thanks everyone for being patient Please carry on and enjoy!
