Modifry's new seatbelt lock
Stopped by the Modifry lab yesterday to get his latest invention. It's a seatbelt lock for the track/auto-x.
Let me start by saying that if you have the CG lock, go ahead and throw it in the garbage. This thing is probably the best solution short of actually getting a four point harness installed on your car.
There are two versions, one with a switch and one with a remote. I opted for the remote option so I don't have to mount a switch anywhere and I have less wires to run. The lock itself is a self centering electromagnet that activates the seatbelt's built in locking mechanism. Once it's activated, your seatbelt locks itself allowing you to cinch up any slack and have super tight support across your lap AND your chest.
Installation was probably on par with installing a glove box organizer. The seatbelt system has a square nut that the seatbelt lock is taylored for. It has a magnetic opening that fits over this nut, positioning the lock perfectly in the spot that it needs to be. All you have to do is reach up there from the trunk well and push it on. There are two wires that get tapped into an easily accessible wire harness for power.
Incase you're wondering how it works, I'll explain. The OEM seatbelt system has a very simple g-force meter inside. When you slam on the brakes or hit the gas hard, it activates a locking mechanism within the seatbelt. I'm sure everyone is familiar with this as it's probably kept them from reaching something at some point. Anyway, the g-force meter is nothing more than a small ball bearing on a cupped platform and a little plastic cover that rests on the ball bearing. When you experience any sort of sudden braking or acelleration or any movement really, the ball bearing leaves the center of it's platform causing the plastic cover to raise, in turn activating a locking mechanism in the seatbelt assembly. The modifry lock takes advantage of this and uses an electromagnet to pull the ball bearing to one side simulating a high g-force situation. Your seatbelt locks and stays locked until you turn off the modifry lock. You can reel the seatbelt back to take up any slack, but it won't let out.
Anyway, just wanted to write a review since they just came out. Not sure if they're up for sale yet but I think they will be this week. Definitely a must have if you ever take your car to the track or want a little more support at all times.

still waiting for the start of official sales, but this is one hell of a mod

This sounds like an awesome product. Pretty damn clever if you ask me, and non-vehicle specific as long as you can access the appropriate location. I like the sounds of this thing! Just don't mount the switch out of reach
I would throw the switch into the center console somewhere, or even possibly between the door sill and the seat. Depending on the price I might be in for a little purchase!

Tell me I'm not the only one who thinks this would be funny to add to the passenger's side, and hit the lock switch in secret.

I have a small problem with this. you could install your CG lock at the top to get he same effect. The reason the cg lock installs at the bottom is because you want the upper half of the seat belt to be able to come loose in a the case of rollover. This will lock you into your seat which is a bad idea if you're upside down without a roll bar. and if you have a roll bar you likely have a harness anyway.
Bob makes great products, but you should beware of what you're risking when you lock the belt at the top vs just locking the lap belt.
