If your insurance will not be high now it will be later after you wreck the S2k. This is simply not a car for someone without a lot of driving experience.
Amen to that. Insurance might be the least of his problems. He has to stay alive first.

Some parents make me sick. Your kid can't get even straight Bs in High School -- and your little ADHD monster deserves an S2000 to go kill himself in? Makes sense to me

It's definitely good that you are thinking about insurance costs now before you actually buy a car. Too many people never even consider it until after the purchase. And by then they've discovered that they just bought a car that they cannot afford to own.

You cannot compare your insurance rates to the rates of others. There are an almost unlimted number of factors that go into calculating what your insurance rates will be - your age, your gender, your location, your credit history, your driving record, the driving records of the people that you live with, the car you drive, statistics of recent claims the insurer has paid, the status of the insurer's investment holdings, etc etc, etc. Knowing what someone else pays for insurance has no bearing on what YOU will have to pay.

The only way to get a realistic picture of what YOUR insurer will charge YOU to insure YOUR car is to call them up and ask them. And while you are talking to them, get them to give you quotes for other vehicles that you are considering buying as well. This helps to give you a good idea what kinds of vehicles will be the most affordable for you to insure.

OMG, are you serious? That's almost $670 per month for insurance!!?!?

If your insurance is that high under your Mom's policy you should seriuosly look into getting your own policy. That is ridiculous. That's twice as much as my car payment!!

you have to consider the integrity of the insurer. cheaper ones often don't pay claims, either fully or at all.

Insurance is going to be expensive. Period.

I don't know how you got "half" saved, and I really don't care. I don't know your family's financial situation either, but I look back at all the money I blew on cars, insurance, and parts when I was younger. If I had been a little wiser and saved/invested it, I would probably be living a bit more comfortably at this stage in the game.

Then again, YMMV

$8000/yr.
Is it really worth it?
It's great that you can afford this but if I had a driving record/situation where I had to fork over that kind of cash for insurance I think I'd get a beater that I felt comfortable driving without collision/comprehensive.
As was suggested try to get a policy on your own. You can't do much worse.
