Money Issues
$8000/yr?! You've got to be joking, right? If you were spending that $670/mo in car payments you could be driving a brand new $50,000 BMW M3.
Or you could take out a 30yr mortgage on a $200,000 home for around $670/mo.

If your insurance will not be high now it will be later after you wreck the S2k. This is simply not a car for someone without a lot of driving experience.
You're headed for trouble if the first thought you have is "I want to make it into something sweet...."
I'd be thinking, "I want to make my driving skills into something sweet..."
Buy a used miata and classes at track school first.
Or you could do what a guy did last year....
Begged his parents to get him an S2000....
They did.
He then found out he couldn't afford the insurance.
Had to sell the car.
At a loss.
