Default More questions after test drive......

Okay, I had a test drive a week or so ago and I'm hooked. I just have a few questions that I have to ask before getting my hopes up on one of these outstanding cars.

1. Has anyone had to replace a top yet? How much did it cost? Am I correct in assuming that it would have to be done at the dealership?

2. Anyone had to replace a clutch yet? What was the damage on that one.

3. Those of you that are putting somewhat normal mileage on your S2000s, is there anything that seems to be a common problem area as the cars become older?

4. Does anyone know if the top from a 2002, i.e. with the glass window, can be retrofitted to the older models?

5. Does the S2000 require premium gas? I would assume so, but haven't seen it talked about anywhere.

That's all I can think of at the moment.

Thanks in advance for any info.

Mike

1. yes, due to theft, not from wear. top costs + install is approximately 1600 bucks. and nope, its not done by the dealership, they will farm it out and charge a few dollars extra for the farming out as well. it is done by a top shop.

3. tires, tires, tires.

4. no difinitive answer on this one yet. a retrofit kit is supposed to be released, but not yet. so, dont buy into the rumors.

5. yup!

1. My car is two + years old and except for scratches in the back window, the top is in perfect condition. Caveat: I have the car in California and it's garaged and usually only out on weekends.

2. Had some transmission work to correct notchy shifting. Now quieter. Depending on when manufactured, this could be a problem, but the dealer fixed with no charge and provided a loaner. I do have low miles, so no warranty issues.

3. Lot of minor issues I read on this site. Nothing in particular, except early manufacturing models transmission issues that I know of.

4. Glass can not be retrofitted. The top mechanism is slightly different.

5. Yes, premium.

Agree re: tires. The originals, which I still have, are about gone on the back with under 12,000 miles. Not a lot of hard driving - some twisties and one track day. All good sticky tires will wear fast and are not cheap.
