I think the Honda S2000 is one of the most beautiful cars in the world. The designers of this car really knew what they were doing.
To me the most beautiful things have an elegant, understated simplicity. For example, the Martin Dreadnought, one of the finest acoustic guitars, looks very plain and simple. Yet it's one of the most beautiful things to behold. In the same way, some of the most beautiful girls I've seen never wear makeup. They simply don't need it.
Look at the Honda S, the sides, the hood, the trunk. There are no ridges, strakes, faux vents, or cheezy indentations. There are simple, smooth lines. The Honda S is not flashy, it's almost plain. Yet it's possibly one of the most beautiful cars I've ever seen.
I have to credit the designers of the S. When you compare the S to other sports cars it has a simple understated beauty that will look good 20, 30 years from now. It's possibly the most beautiful car in the world.
Most (all?) Japanese cars look dated in a few years, and even more dated ina few more. This is true of the 350Z of today, which is already starting to look fat and gloppy.
Look at a 1970's Celica or an 1980's 240SX. Look at a Pulsar NX. I think my wife's 1990 Camry is a cleaner design than today's (it was done by the Japanese fellow who designed the new Viper - how about that?!).
The S2000 is beautifully proportioned and there is attention to detail everywhere you look. Look how close it is overall to the BMW Z8, which I think is a stunning car.
Miata - nice but dated
350X - muscular but dated, like an old wrestler on steroids
MR2 - current one looks like a vacuum cleaner - Gen III was nice (the mini-Ferrari one)
Z3 - blechh!
Z4 - the Swiss Army knife of sports cars - an angle for every occasion - it looks like it was in a crusher just as the Governor called to halt the execution!
Elise - Puh-leez!
NSX - Nice, holding up well, but still may look somewhat oddly proportioned in 20 years. It is still to exotic to be disliked.
Here is the only other Japanese Sports Car that touched me:
Another "2000".
