Default mpg Question

I have recently been getting wildly varying mpg readings. Sometimes I get as much as 25 in city, other times like 15. (Always in the same town, same driving habits, more or less the same ambient temperature). Here is my question (probabaly pretty lame): is mpg likely to change when using different pumps/stations. Does the seepd at which you pump the gasoline effect the volume, in terms of when the pump shuts off?

Finally, does anyone else have problems with the fuel gauge itself. Sometimes mine reads properly. othertimes it doesn't (get's "stuck" either on full , even after like 50 miles, or on partial after filling up.) Thanks

I'll get 28 hwy most of the time, but never under 25 anywhere.. Once the pump shuts off on its own, don't make it a habit of trying to squeeze in a few more cents worth, I believe it can lead to problems with the vent.

Use premium...most fuel is the same...different additives make different brands. You may notice less fuel economy with gasohol... ethanol has less energy per gallon.

I've noticed a large difference in city v. highway (23/29) but that's about it. Try to stick with Shell, Exxon, BP/Amoco premiums, they have the best additive packages (My dad is a Chemical engineer for the fuel companies.)

MPG depends largely on how the individual does the actual calculation and what numbers he uses.

Mine is the same way . . . and I usually ride around a good 20 miles or so on 0 bars and still end up putting like 11.5 gallons in everytime. Only ONCE have I seen over 12 gallons of gas go into my car, and that was on the dragon (12.5 actually when I stopped at Deals gas) and we have a 13.1 gallon tank don't we? That being said, I think our gauge is very innacurate when it gets down low.

At times I feel like I have a 6.0 Liter V-8 under my hood cause the mpg seems so bad...but other times those bars just never go down. I started taking the highway a lot more to work, school, etc. and it's helped me save a few bucks.

I've never run my car to zero bars but if the car only accepts about 12 gallons when it reachs "0", it probably saves a lot on AAA calls.
