Trust me, the thought has crossed my mind.

Great idea! I've been finding a few small chips in this same area and have been trying to come up with a solution. One thing I thought of was using some clear-bra material on that area that gets hit. That would be near invisible. There may be some downsides to that idea, though, that I haven't thought of.

can we see a picture from a little far away so that the entire car be viewed together with the flap?
If it warms back up a bit I might pul the cover off the car but I suspect this is the best I can do for about 4 months because without a battery in it I'm not pushing out into the snowy driveway and the garage is not big enough for me to get way back to get a pic...
I lightened the photo a bit to help show off the flap. Shooting a black flap in front of a black tire can be a bit of a challenge...
I did the same thing to my other toy, and here is a good example of how subtle they can be.

The only downside I can think of is cleaning. Depending on the color of your car, the edge of that mask material always seems to collect a bit of dirt, so after washing the car you would really need to get down on your knees and detail this with a tiny soft brush to clean off the edges.
My experience though to date with this material is very good, clearly it has the strength to prevent chips.
