I'd love to buy some of the cool gear shift knobs similar to those I've seen on US member's cars. We don't have anything similar that I can buy in Australia so my pet project at the moment is to make myself a custom shift knob for my car as I've noticed mine is getting a bit daggy looking.

I've been playing with a couple of different designs including spherical but I just can't decide whether to go for a complete one piece knob or whether to incorporate another metal (see pic of knob with cap in it). I thought an anodised gold cap etched with my VIN or S2000 logo would be a nice contrast against the aluminium and provide for that extra touch of class. Or maybe a blue insert since I have a blue car? Or maybe chrome insert and aluminium knob? I'm not looking for anything too flashy ... rather something classy, simple and elegant that reflects the status of my S2000. Call it subtle personalisation

Pics shown are just my prototypes for one style of knob I'm considering and will not have the straight shaft at the bottom. These are straight off the machine and unpolished at present. They are also unthreaded at this stage.

The trouble is I can't make up my mind as there are so many options at my disposal. So.. I guess my question(s) are....

1) Should I go for the spherical or standard knob? (I've heard good reports on using the spherical knobs)

2) Should I go for the contrasting cap insert or a single 1 piece design (no cap)?

3) Should I etch around the knob (like a band) or across the top of it?

What do you guys think?

Simple is best, I agree. My pet hate with the stock knob is there's now a nasty gouge on it where the ring on my left ring finger keeps making contact. At some stage I'm going to get my son to make me one. He's made one for his MR2. If you have access to a C and C machine you could cut the gear shift pattern into the top.
Posted my cheque this morning BTW. I enjoyed my visit to your super apartment. Jan wants to know when she can move in

I have seen Muz's beautiful apartment, and when I first saw this post I wondered what Muz's Personal Pet Project might be. The movie Weird Science came to mind . The above just confirms my suspicions.

I was the first one to contact Voodoo Bob regarding a new shift knob for the S2000, and helped test his initial prototypes. I did this because I shift with my hand on top of the knob and hated the shape of the stock unit which is better suited for shifting with your hand to the side.

For many of us the spherical shape is the only way to go. I urge you to buy a knob from Voodoo and try it for awhile before you decide on anything. I can tell you that from my point of view I would not even consider a knob the shape of your prototypes.

BTW, I have not missed the shift pattern in the least.

cdelena:

I have actually looked at the voodoo knob a couple of times. Would it be more resistant to ring damage?? I quite like that substantial round look. Isn't it quite expensive?

What's 'Inexpensive' to someone who's not 'In oil' Do they do a polished version?
