Saud2K; You're right. The catalytic converter is a restrictor. Taking it out will reduce backpressure, and thus increase horsepower. It will also increase emissions (pollution) significantly.
The clicking sound you hear is the thermal contraction of various metal parts on your car as it cools down. Most cars make this noise, and it will vary from car to car. Years ago on an Accord I had I pinpointed much of the noise to a heat shield below the converter.
When metal gets hot, it expands (thermal expansion). When it cools down, it contracts. Different metal components cool off at different rates, depending on their ability to dissipate heat. Since the fasteners holding it in place are fixed, there is significant force on those fasteners to move, thus making the clicking sound.

i just bought my ap2 used with 50xxx. its been modified in the past but returned to stock. i noticed the "ticking heat noise also". mine is constant once the car has been running for a while. i notice it when stopped at intersections and when i park it. i thought it was maybe a damaged heat shield bent and resting on the cat or exhaust pipe-being exposed to the heat directly.
ill inspect it sometime but after hearing everyone im assuming its just something i need to get used to...
glad i found this post, one less thing to worry about.

This question always cracks me up, don't park in any tall grass or on anything flammable.
The cat gets REALLY HOT in order to burn on any unburnt hydrocarbons and whatever else needs oxidized under extreme heat. It's the function of the cat and like all metal expands and contracts when heated and cooled. Makes a lot of noise, ever hear a woodstove?? Same sound.
