Default my theory on S-02 milage differences

I have seen some very wide variances in the milage people are getting out of their OEM S-02s -- even when driving styles are supposedly the same. I have a theory that may explain this somewhat. Could it be the S-02s wear at vastly different rates (even more so than regular tires) depending on the road surface? Maybe these tires and their compound just wear out considerably faster (with all other factors save one the same) when driving on concrete roads -- as opposed to asphalt roads. Does anyone think there might be some truth to this theory?

it depends on how hard the driver turns, brakes, accelerates(burning out..etc) and the speed on the highway. if you also drive on a very rough road, that can considerably reduce tire life.

One of the gurus on here thinks it has more to do with tire pressure.

im guessing lower tire pressure is bad right( lower tire life)? ...since when the tire is flat, there is more contact on pavement.

If you have slightly lower tire pressure you get better grip. The trade off is tire longevity. I have tried it with s-02's. With an extra 2 psi. in the rear I can get 4-6K more mileage. I think the alignment also plays a part in tire wear. The front toe in makes the tires wear more aggressively from the inside. Try adjusting to zero front toe. On the rear a little more negative camber also increases wear by allowing the tires to wear more evenly. For more info, post on the Racing and Competition forum-you will find a tire Guru lurking about.

It's important to make sure your car is aligned right. The S2000 rear wheels are toed out for better handling but this puts more wear on the tires especially if they are toed out to much. Also because of the camber the inside wears more then the outside once again for handling.

I have 6,400 miles on my 2002 and my rear tires were basically gone at 4/32's. I couldn't believe this. I don't beat the car or peel out. I called my dealer and complained and they told me to bring the car in. I brought it in on Friday and they split the cost 50/50 for two new rear tires! The Honda rep approved it. He did say, if I came in with 8k+ on them, they wouldn't have done anything.

I'm now happy that I have two new rear tires.

I run 32 psi in them.

I you saying if I put 34 in them, I'm going to get 4k+ more out of them?

Is it me or the rear tires have shallower thread depth (compare to the fronts of course)as if they were shaved?

I noticed this when my car still had the plastic rim covers on it.

I got just over 30k on the rears before replace with same and now have over 41k on the front.
Mostly hwy driving on cement and ash.
During this time I have checked tire pressure 3 times.
Still have original factory alignment.
