The people voted with their wallets and decided that they didn't like cars that are slow, tiny, funny looking, have little range, are difficult to refuel (takes long time and nowhere to do it), and may not in fact be less polluting (the origional energy source determines how much pollution there is).

If "we" means those of us in the US, then certain politicians have bowed to the demands of their environmentally radical constituency groups and are fighting allowing drilling in any new areas.

Sorry Mav! I'll be more than happy to take credit for the hijacking of this thread. Must say I've been impressed by the overall level of maturity we've maintained in this one, and thanks to the Mods for not closing it down.
Final thoughts. Honda believes in Green cars. All Honda models are now LEV or cleaner. Some say it's because Green sells better, I dare say it's more because Honda believes in polluting as little as possible, and any increase in sales because of that concept is incidental. Honda and Toyota were the first auto makers to successfully develop and market Hybrid fuel vehicles. Why is it that the Japanese auto industry is consistently two steps ahead of us with regard to new technologies? (rhetorical) It's because they realize that we are no longer a collection of independent nations doing their own things, we are now a global auto marketplace, everything we do affects everyone else in regard to the environment. The USA has typically been resistant to forced increases in fuel economy, this because the auto makers don't want to spend money to make their engines more efficient, and do so only when they have no other recourse. Sorry if this sounds to some like liberal ranting, but we need to think now as a world, not a country, in regard to the future of this planet. The World agrees global warming is a problem, the USA needs to get off its self-righteous high horse and become a global participant.
OK I think my engine is warmed up now....
