First, start with a small drill bit and cover the top of the trunk with masking tape where you are going to drill. Mark your holes and drill the smaller holes. When you confirm the placement of these holes by lining up (test fit) your spoiler, push the drill bit all the way down (perpendicular to the trunk lid) till it hits the second layer of trunk metal. Continue to drill through that second layer.
Now, finish drilling the first hole to the proper size with a bigger drill bit. Test fit the spoiler again and confirm that the holes in the second layer is directly under the spoiler bolts. If they are, get a drill bit that will make a hole big enough for a socket and extension to fit through and drill out those holes in the second layer. (Usually, a 1/2" to 5/8" drill bit will do.) Treat all your holes with touch up paint or silicone seal to cover the bare metal edges. Now you have a way of threading and holding the nut that goes on those spoiler studs.

You can easily eliminate that "raggity" hole effect if you do the final drilling of the hole from the good side (outside) INTO the trunk. Also, that's where the masking tape comes in - makes it even cleaner.

I would also like to purchase the trunk spoiler sold by Handa but I've hesitated because the installation calls for an item known as a "trunk spring installer/remover" and this isn't something I have access to.

Does anybody here know if I'd be able to substitute different tool for this purpose?

I have done two rear spoiler installs - one OEM and one non-OEM. My non-OEM spoiler is much heavier than the OEM one and I didn't need the heavier springs installed. Same for the OEM spoiler. We did NOT replace the springs and the trunk pops up just fine.
As is, the trunk without a spoiler will NOT spring all the way up anyway. All you need is for the trunk to pop up enough to unlatch when you release it. The heavier springs is really a waste of time to put in.

But, to answer your question, you can use a very large channel lock plier to perform the same task IF you are careful. Anytime you use a substitute for the "designated" tool, you will risk injury.

I added the heavier springs after my spoiler install. It pops up MUCH HIGHER than it ever did, even WITHOUT the spoiler. Mine pops up about 5 inches now.

All you need is enough spring strength to "release" the trunk from the latch mechanism. It does not matter whether it pops it up 1" or a foot. You will still need to lift it the rest of the way. And since this trunk stands almost past vertical when full open, it doesn't matter if your spoiler weighs 5 lbs. or 50 lbs. It will NOT fall down unless you have a strong wind blowing against it. Even the unspoilered trunk lid will blown down in a wind.
But I suppose you can boast about how high your trunk pops up!
