Greetings, fellow S2K owners. It’s been a long, long time since I last posted here. I still own the black roadster that I purchased back in October 2006 and I joined the forum two years later. I need your help.
I have a problem with the rubber gasket (or whatever it’s called) that seals the convertible top with the door window (see photos). I have tried numerous glues to keep it attached to the metal strip, but nothing seems to work—at least not for very long. I’ve even tried taking it to a bodyshop, but their glue didn’t hold for long either.
Given the age of the car, I’m also thinking I need a new gasket/seal. It looks like it’s starting to deteriorate.
Has anyone had this problem? Anyone found a solution? TIA.
Only one side or section having problems? Looks like rust there. Might be easier to work on this with the roof partially open and the surface of the frame and the rubber channel spotlessly clean. Also might be beneficial if the rubber was treated with magic Shin-Etsu grease to keep it pliable.
Designed to just snap on as noted. If you DO have to use glue as a last resort consider a contact adhesive such as 3M High Strength (comes in 90 and other strengths) but beware this is put on both surfaces and consequently (1) sticks instantly on contact so you gotta position parts exactly and (2) holds so tightly you may have to cut the part off if you ever need to replace it.
My 2006 doesn't exhibit this. If you're near Richmond you're welcome to look at mine.
The parts show on the "Honda parts" websites but they ain't cheap and may not really be available for our 20-year old cars. About $50 per section and there are 3 on each side.
Thanks, everyone, for the suggestions. It looks like the one end of the weatherstrip is defective, as it does not hook into the end of the weatherstrip on the rear end. I may try that special glue that was recommended before purchasing (yikes—talk about super-expensive!) the full set.
I am wondering now if the damage to the rear strip was done when the new soft top was installed (perhaps some of you remember the factory recall way back when.
