Default Need Help With Metal Shifter Surround

I was trying to remove the leather shifting boot and cracked the potmetal piece that is painted gray that surrounds the shifter and contains the roof switch and emergency light switch. I went to my local idiot dealer and he says I have to buy the whole consol ($175.00) I thought I remember a thread stating you could buy this piece seperately because owners were not happy with the finish on the piece because it was flaking off and they were removing the paint which left a shiny metal surface. Does anyone have the part number for this piece or know where I can get one without purchasing the whole center consol? Many thanks!!!!

Sorry to hear about this!

I may be wrong, but since the mounts for that piece are heat-molded in place (i.e. one integral unit) I think you do in fact need to buy the entire center console.

Corrections, anyone?

Always try the sponsors - they may have better prices on the part(s) you need.

- Chris

Have to agree^^^^^^^^^^. You could try to cover it with Aluminum or CF trim. (depending on the crack) Good Luck Brandon

I do remember the thread you are talking about. The person in question did crack the same piece but covered it with an aluminum or titanium piece. I can't remember who sells the dash kits, but you might try MG Racing.

Send an email to "Taka Kaira Inc, Japan" <sales@takakaira.com> requesting prices on the Japanese Titanium surround and beverage holder lid. I think it is around $170.00

I just ordered one of these to cover the crack I made installing Rick's shift boot...

I am curious as to how the crack was caused. Did you lift on one side at a time or try to lift it whole? Why do you think it broke? Could you have avoided the damage?
Words of wisdom would be appreciated. I haven't installed mine yet.

Isn't there an aftermarket aluminium dash kit that includes this piece as an upgrade? I'm sure I've seen one somewhere!

I would suspect all of the cracks to the surround occur while attempting to remove the surround from the console. During this process, as Rick details, you have to press in the tabs that hold the surround to the console. There are approximately 6 or so of these. This by far is the most difficult task as once you get one of them out, it can pop back in. This is what happened to me. One of the tabs I got out, slid back in and while trying to wedge it out again, I bent the surround. Hence, be very patient while removing these.

The crack is very small on the drivers side. Oh well, it gave me a reason to go ahead and order the JDM titanium bits.

I would suspect all of the replacements are really just sitting on top of the OEM one. BTW, the JDM one is real titanium, not aluminum.
