to prevent cracking when installina new boot a dremel and a needle nose plier is needed. well the dremel is optional but highly recommended. well to remove the plate you need to pinch in these metal tabs connecting the plate to the main shifter plate. this is an incredible bitch to do. well it was for me at least. then while pinching at the same time carefully pull on the boot to remove it one by one. i think there were like six tabs but cant remember. but the install in possible to do without cracking.

also yes, i think you would need to buy an entire new console to replace the shifter plate because they come from factory all heat welded together and thats the reason why a dremel is needed.

In all fairness to Rick, he clearly states to take your time and be careful with what you do. It really is a bitch to complete.

Here you can see the crack I made in the surround during the boot install. Please note that is light reflecting around the edge of the console, not dirt!

Thanks for everbodys help. I ended up covering the metal surround in carbon fiber material and it looks sweet. It now matches the rest of my interior. I definately was not going to pay $175.00 for a new console!!!
Cheers, Kurt
