OK, here's the deal. I'd really like to go to Asheville and spend some time with the unique and wonderful Stook family, but I'm out here a few miles from the rest of you and I need a little help....

Does anyone know about how water-tight these cars are? By my early estimates, I would need to get up enough speed to tread water for about three to four days to make land again. This might be tough considering I don't have much of a start at it. (Short island.) Just in case, I thought it might be smart to install some after market gear.

I explored the bridge thing, but no one seems to want to finance it. Hawaii says if they fund it they'll never be able to limit or control the number of people coming out and traffic will be utterly out of control. California says they can't keep up with the roads they have. No one seems willing to make a commitment.

Anyone know who might carry a U-Boat mod? I think I already look enough like a shark to fit in down there, so the rest is just nuts and bolts. I could be wrong, but I think the periscope might even be fun on land sometimes. I promise not to torpedo anyone or do any emergency surfacing on the way over, but there could be a little racing going on with the dolphins and such. (I don't know if that's illegal or not...)

I've already packed a lunch and I'm ready to become a U-Boat commander. Any suggestions?

You crack me up Steve!

Aren't there great driving roads in Hawaii? I'm here in Michigan and envious of your environment and weather!

You COULD fly over and spend some time in the S2000 passenger seat?

Cheers,

<sigh> There is a much more obvious solution than getting up to a high speed and skipping across the Pacific. Simply overinflate your tires with helium <check out Nitrogen thread>. That way you have both propulsion and flotation factors to make the trip nice and easy. Hmm... I wonder how many miles to the gallon you'd get? Better take a fishing pole too, you'll need the trunk space for gas. 4K miles (roughly) / 15 miles to the gallon = 267 gallons - a full tank...bah, you can pack 250 gallons of gas in there easy!

Ever hear of the Amphicar? Doesn't look very seaworthy, however.

Well, how about this solution? Put in the same little electric motor that is in the Insight. Put the batteries in the trunk. Detach the driveshaft and connect the Insight motor to it. Attach a propeller to the end of the driveshaft and roll that bad boy down to the water. Crank her up and off you go!

James Bond has a Lotus that drives under water. I think all the parts are available in the J.C. Whitney catalog.

Of course! J.C. Whitney! They've always got the really classy gear. Why didn't I think of that????

I can't wait to use the periscope in a traffic jam when I'm sitting behind some giant SUV. I'll just look over him to see what the heck is going on!!!
