K&N F$ck Up!!! Help!!!
Tonight, I decided I will bring my car in the morning to the dealership to get my fuel issue resolved (getting around 170 miles to the tank, when I used to get over 220, and I still drive the same). I then thought to myself that if something was wrong they would blame it on my K&N air filter. So I went to swap in the OEM Filter. After installing the OEM, I went to take a look at the K&N. Inside the filter were two shaved rubber slivers there were hanging on by oil. This is probably from the cookie cutter I put in. My question is that if any thing did fly into my engine would my check engine light go on? Wouldn't my engine be gone by now? Lastly, if anything did go into my engine, would the result be the bad mileage I've been experiencing? I would appreciate any help. Thank you.
It is possible that if crap got sucked in, it could be keeping a butterfly valve from closing or somehow screwing up the mixture and thus giving you bad mileage.
If the rubber made it all the way to the combustion area, it would most likely get burned up, but the gummy mess could foul injectors... thus screwing up mileage.
This is all conjecture, but the moral of the story is make sure your intake lines are solid.
