new engine a bad thing?
i have a 2001 sk2 with 26k miles on it. i'm thinking of selling it and getting a enw one in the spring of '05.
my issue is that there was a new engine put in at 5k miles. it didn't happen while i was driving (my brother had it at the time!). i think it was an errant downshift that caused the problem, not an engine problem.
anyway, when i sell it, should i divulge this info? does it show up on carfax? and, is it a bad thing (to have a new engine)?

Not sure if it would show up on the carfax or not...
If all work was done to factory spec, I don't see how it could effect anything to consider it a bad thing... However, having a new engine just makes a car lose it's authenticity in my opinion... but that could just be me.

The numbers on the engine do not match those of the car now.
One owner ended up with a brand new car because of this. Honda was replacing engine for free, but owner argued the huge loss of value caused by mismatched components. Remember dealerships selling the car on "only 5000 to be imported into North America". Limited Production car is worthless unless everything is in order.
...but we digress. I'd say tell them, it ads to the honesty factor, and there's no harm done because the engine's newer than it would be. Just keep that fact about the mis-shift OUT. It alludes to the way the car was driven; i.e. fast. There was a problem with the spark plug torque specs in early build model cars.

You would think that they would have accurate information showing that it's more like 10k per year.
First of all, Carfax doesn't show $hit, well, some of the $hit. My previous car was in a serious accident and Carfax didn't show $hit on it. It said that the car had an impeccible history.
The accident was bad enough to have major body damage and transmission damage as well.
I also have a new engine, well, just a new block. But it wasn't from mis-shifting, because the head would've been replaced too if it was from that. New engines should not depreciate a car's value, imo.

Do dealerships still spill this line?

of course i'd want to know if a car i was considering had a new engine - or a new block. i guess i don't know what was replaced now that i think about it. anyway, i wouldn't touch a car like mine unless there was a reason to do so - like it was cheap.
i don't want to give mine away. what kind of $$ is everyone seeing for a my2001 with 26k miles?
