Default The new guy

Well I finally got into the Honda world, after being into VW.

I bought an 2000 S2000 with 89k miles turbo'd with a Garrett .70, full race manifold.

I just have a few questions, it looks like my gearbox is melting a little from the manifold. I know it gets hot. The engine cover won't fit because of them so I need to ?purchase? a heatshield? The temp gauge will go to 4 bars after driving for more than 20mins, but will drop back down to 3. Should this be a concern? I was thinking about upgrading the radiator to help, or maybe just wrapping the manifold and making a heatshield.

Also when im WOT black smoke will puff out of the exhaust, seems to be running rich. my air/fuel ratio is around 14 at idle. just seeing if this is normal or not. WOT is about 11-12

Thanks for all the advice!

I have the same manifold and yes, it gets very hot! I upgraded my radiator and fans to help with overheating (added an oil cooler as well).

A/F ratio of 14 at WOT is very lean, get your car retuned asap.

Does this car have an EMS? If so what kind? How was it turned? The valve cover doesn't fit? What exactly does this mean? I've never seen a manifold that eliminates the ability to put on a valve cover. This sounds like a grenade

4 bars on temp if standard (not Modifry'd) AP1 is really hot. Like warp your headgasket hot.

If what your saying is true your engine will be toast in no time one way or another.

As others have said.

What engine management?
14 is not WOT is it? Assuming you meant that is partial throttle, what is the afr WOT?
If you are getting 4 bars on the temp gauge you will blow the headgasket soon most likely.
Black smoke would be fuel so see what your afr's are in boost full throttle.

Idling its 14, WOT is around 11-12.

The temp will go up to 4 bars and dip down to 3.
I just wrapped the headers and am getting a heatsheild. next is upgraded radiator.

Management is AEM

14.7 is where it should idle. That is normal. 11-12 should be good there. Do you have the temp gauge fix? Or AEM EMS series 2?

11 is a bit on the lean side but isn't going to hurt anything. 4 bars is normal for a turbo'd s2k in the summer months as long as it's not staying there. You could get a lower temp thermostat

FIRST THING I'D DO: Get some header wrap and wrap the manifold!

Does you car have the modifry temp mod for the AEM?
http://www.modifry.com/products/ect/index.htm

On the contrary to what everyone is saying...4 bars isn't a problem.

2 bars - Ok for VTEC - 160 degrees
3 bars - 175 to 189 degrees - normal operating temp
4 bars - 190 to 204 degrees - fan should be on
5 bars - 205 to 219 degrees - cause for concern
6 bars - 220 to 234 degrees - Yikes!
7 bars - 235 to ... - Double Yikes!
