Default New Owner Checklist

I've had the car for about a month now, and it's time to do some maintenance and preventive stuff. I'd like some input as to what everyone thinks I should do to the car (or what you all did as new owners). So far I'm doing this:

Fluids (differential, transmission, oil)---> should I go all out and do coolant/brake/clutch too?

Modifry convertible top fix (the straps...mine are extremely loose)

So, what else? I'm open to "mods" as long as they're very cheap/free, but for the most part I would like to do maintenance and preventive stuff (this is a used car and I'm not entirely sure how it's been driven for the first 46k miles, although it seems to be tip-top so far).

I'd like to keep it running perfectly as long as possible, as I'm sure all of you all do to!

Thanks,

Danny B.

PS - if there is already a thread with a list like this, please point me in the right direction. I searched but with no luck.

everything you mentioned +
valve adjustment
air filter
cabin filter
tighten throttle cable
check usual tear areas for convertible top. if you search for this you'll find plenty of threads.

check the brake fluids color. if its brown change it. Also a quick look at the pads wouldn't hurt either.

How many miles do you have on the car? Some of this stuff may be overkill if you have low miles. Do you know any of the previous maintenance history?

It's an '03 with 47k miles. Very clean, but no I do not know the maintenance history. This is the reason I'd really like to take the precaution of replacing things.

i'm a little cheap... so instead of the strap replacements i just use my other hand to push the center bar down same as the straps do... works fine and is free

i'm used to little quirks though so it doesnt bug me

also have an 03 but mine only has 33k on it... straps are useless, i could maybe use them to hold my wallet up or tolltag... if that..haha

I've got a wear spot on the inside of the soft top that will be a hole soon if something isn't done about it, and after some research I'm pretty sure it's the straps (or lack thereof) causing it.

The support bar isn't getting pulled back far enough during the trip down, and it seems to be snagging on the top. Regardless, it's a $20 fix and I'd like to have the peace of mind from knowing it's NOT going to tear my top.

physically using your hand to lower that bar serves the same purpose as the straps lowering the bar...

and your top can still tear even if you are lowering the bar correctly.
