Default New S2000 some Q's

Hey guys, just bought a '01 S2K Silverstone last saturday with 49K miles on it. Paid 19 which isn't bad (well for me :-P).

anyway, i've got a couple questions on care and repairs to some of the stuff on the S2k. Sorry if i'm asking redundant questions that may have been asked before, i've searched but maybe with the wrong keywords?

1. Convertible top, how often can you use it, currently i drop the top everytime i drive it, so it goes up and down like 6times a day. Is that too much?
2. Headlight, if you look at the 3rd picture, you'll see that the plastic cover on the headlight has some stress marks. It doesn't look so hot. Is there anyway to get just the replacement plastic or do i have to replace the whole headlight?
3. LowJack, my dealer recommended i get a lowjack because the S2000 is apparently one of the most stolen cars out there. (he tells me this AFTER the paperwork). Should i do this considering its $350 or so?
4. Since its a '01 and i'm unfamiliar with the problems with the car (i've scoured the site), is there anything i should check/test before the dealer's 2k warranty expires? (i bought a 24K extended warranty, cause i hear these cars are shiet expensive to work on).
5. The rear "window" is plastic and is not as clear as it is new, is there a way to replace just the plastic or is it the "whole-new-top" deal?

Here's my baby

PS. S2000 is the best car i've driven! Was going to get a RX8 till i met the S2k! Love it!

Regarding the rear plastic window, before you replace it (and even if you DO replace it) get Plexus [plexxus?] spray (mail order). It's SO easy to use compared to anything else I've tried, and clears the window right up. I bought 2 cans which should last me a year or two.

ENJOY!!!

decker ,

1. i drop the top all the time. it is OK. Keep an eye out for some 1/4" tears that might develop behind the side windows about halfway up. It would be prudent to go ahead and reinforce that area with some duct tape before anything happens.

2. Headlights are available on ebay daily. Just get a 00-01 as the 02-03 and 04-05 one are different (but fit).

3. The S2000 is not one of the most stolen. It doesn't have any interchangable parts with other cars (that's why VTEC integras are low in number now). It also has the immobilizer key. S2000s are stolen, but usually by people that have a spare key that is programmed to the car.

4. Check to make sure the tranny shifts smooth. listen to the rear end for clicks. There is a buzzing on decelleration that affects cars in your year, but that is an annoyance and likely won't be covered.

5. the rear window can be replaced by iself or the whole top. the work is the same for both, though, so you may as well get a new top ($700). You can also retrofit the top with the glass window with some minor mods ($900).

1. You just have tp protect the rear window from folding for long window life. Click on sponsors and look up MUZ. He offers a product for this. But yes over time it will start to get small holes. Not all do, but I think it has to do with how often they use it too.
2. No, you have to replace whole headlight, Retail 600, Hardtopguy.com about 400 each. You can cover them with a clear bra that will stop them from getting sandblasted in the future. See www.ricks2k.com.
3. Fear, what a great sales method. They really don't take the whole car that often, it is the seats, steering wheel and shift knob that they take all the time. It takes less them 5 mins to remove them, 4 months to replace them at the cost of 7000+. Keep the car in a garage and you should be fine. Many have installed seat locks (cost 65 -/+).
4. Get a list of the TSB that have been done to the car. If they are a Honda Dealer they should beable to generate a list of them for you.
5. Yes, it can be replaced. Honda sells that rear section (the one with the window) seperatly, but the installation labor is high. You might want to consider replacing your whole top with the MY02+ glass window version. There is a How To theard you can search here. But like the other post sadi, get some Plexus first. Cheap, easy to use and it works.

What a DOUCHEBAG! When I got mine they told me that theives will "run away" if they see that I have an alarm... I almost couldn't hold back the laughter since my Integra was stolen with an alarm and all. The CHP found it stripped before I knew it was gone so, a lowjack would have been no help! And I'm pretty sure they used a tow truck so, NOTHING WOULD HAVE HELPED!

If you live in an area where cars tend to get broken into or if you park outside, you might want to consider some seat locks. Kids have been known to steal S2000 seats for their Civics, Integras etc. You will still end up with a smashed window or a nice big hole cut in your top but at least you can drive your car to have it fixed because you'll still have your seats.

Get the sparkplug TSB done as it can be an engine killer.

Before spending hundreds dollars replacing headlights, you should try "Kit Scratch Remover" in jellow bottle for less than $5, I used it to keep my headlight covers clean and smooth.
