Next best handling modification?
The S2000 (7# CTSC) is relegated to a dry weather only vehicle. No rain, no snow. Only sees ~7000 miles per year. The S02s are almost done.
Replacement S02s are ~$150. To replace with Pilot Sport Cups ~$210 per tire. I keep hearing how race tires make such a significant improvement in handling and lap times in the dry.
Any utility to running Pilot Sport Cups on the street? The GT3 comes with them as OEM equipment (and yes, I know that an S2000 is NOT a GT3). Even if I have to replace the tires every year / 7000 miles... is there any significant benefit in handling to doing this?
I'd say NO if it ever saw rain. But if it corners at 1.00 G with these tires, it might be worth it...
Why don't people do this routinely? If you could out-handle most other things with this setup, is it the money or the street conditions that prevent people from doing this?
IMHO: it might be a better way to spend money than an X-brace....

Other than the short life of the tires, the Pilot Sport Cups are r-compond race tires which will reqire warm up until they can have actual traction on the road. They are very bad when there is rain. IMHO, they are not suitable for street use, unless you don't drive agressive which I doubt.
I would get an extra set of rims and mount the sport cups on there. Then when you want to drive agressive or go to the track you can just swap them out. Probably save you more money in the long run.

R-compound tires just aren't practical for street use, and should be left for the track. Unless you only drive in the twisties and not highway/city, these tires just aren't practical.
I just placed an order for a set of Bridgestone RE-01R, which are supposed to be the next best thing compared to R-compounds.

Atlsupra:
That's a great point. Forgot about warm up and normal operating temperatures. It'd cut my top down season even further!
Davie:
That's also a good idea! I had a set of Blizzaks on spare OEM rims, but the car is going to be stored for the Winter now... I may try out the PSCs on the spare wheels and see how that goes. Maybe I'll run those in the height of summer and the S02s when it gets cooler!

I would go with the Advan A048's or Pirelli PZero Corsa's. I heard the sport cups take a real long time to warm up. I'm probably gonna go with a set of pzero's when I replace my azenis.

However, I used S02 and S03 on my Supra before, and from my experience I like the RE-01R better. The price is very similar to what the S02s, so they are definitely worth the money. Just my 2 cents.
