Default No Green Key Light

Hi Guys,

I'm new to this forum and the world of S2k's, I just bought a second hand Y reg car 10 days ago. Bought it from an alleged mates mate! (obvioulsy thinking he wouldn't stitch me up )

I know this issue has been posted before, but just want to find a definitive answer!

Anyway, all went well driving it home, parked it in the garage, cleaned it, hugged it etc.....

Drove it to the garage, went to restart it, NOTHING! Engine turned over when the Start button was pressed, but no Green Key light on the dashboard. Tried all three keys (including valet), all combinations of the alarm key fob, still nothing.

The AA key eventually took it away to the Honda dealer, where obviously it started! The key said it was due to a low voltage battery and that 3 other S2k had been in during the week for the same problem!

had no reason not to believe the guy, so took it home. Went to a mates house last night, jumped in to drive home, sam thing, engine turned over, no green light, car stranded!!

Anyway, it's at the dealers now, bank hoilday so won't be fixed until Tuesday (another weekend ruined without my new car) but want to know what to say to the mechanic so he doesn't fob me off again with a pathetic excuse!

I've read stuff about immobiliser circuits not working properly, could this be an intermittant problem as I'm having?? Or is it likely to be something else??

The little indictor window on the battery shows a red blob with a blue surround, I think that mean it is OK?

Any information to get the mechanic to actually do his job please!!

By the way, still within warranty, so don't care about cost!

Thanks

Jimmy

Try wiping your keys off. I have an RSX with the same immobilizer. I was driving around one day, made a stop and 10 minutes later it wouldn't start after 5 min of trying to start it and looking around the engine, I wiped the key and some black residue (aluminum oxide) came off on my shirt and the car started right up!

Cheers for the advice, out of interest was it exactly the same, did the green light not come on etc?

When it won't start, does the engine crank? Usually, if there is a problem with an Immibilizer circuit, the vehicle will crank, but not start.

Do any other accessories (lights, windows, locks, climate controls) work?

My blind guess is that the battery could be dead or the battery cables are loose.

Good luck.

You Brits sure are some funny blokes with your fobbing and stitching each other. Hope you're imbibed when you do those things. How do you get away with having so many mates? We are only allowed to have one legally here. Gotta love ya tho.

The tech should be able to figure the problem out if he has access to the Honda Diagnostic System (HDS), an computer system that hooks up to your car. It is used on most occasions for reprogramming keys for cars (OBD2), resetting certain sensors, and diagnosing any ECU related problems. So hopefully they have used it or will use it to find out the problem, good luck...

Oxide (or other crap) on the key would have no effect on the immobilizer system. The system works by way of RF transponders, so there's no need for direct electrical contact. I think you just got lucky after wiping it on your shirt

Cheers for the advice allkingz

All the other electrics work fine, a/c, stereo etc. The engine cranks over like normal (i.e. doesn't sound like a dud battery)

If the issue is only intermitent, will the Tech guys at Honda be able to find it?

Jim,

Do you have any other transponders on your keyring, like the ones they use for auto-pay gas stands, etc.?

MacGyver
Sorry, no other things on the key ring. Other than the immobiliser transponder
