Default No Pop-A-Lock

One of the things I love about the S2000, is that it is basically impossible to lock your keys inside the car. The thought never really crossed my mind tell I almost got outta my car without grabbing my keys. Then I realized it couldn't happen.

I will admit as embarrassing as it is, I have in fact locked myself out of my car. It definitely is possible since our cars do auto-lock themselves. I'm still unsure what triggers the auto-lock because I always leave my car unlocked in my garage and when I go to start her up in the morning it's sometimes locked and other times not. I have a suspicion that it auto-locks itself if you press the unlock button on the key after you take the key out of the ignition but I could be mistaken.

I too have an MY00 so I don't think your car should be different than mine...

if the doors have been remotely unlocked and you don't open the doors after x amount of time, they car locks itself again.

If you normally lock your center console and you slam your trunk with the keys in there...

There are several ways to lock your keys inside of an S2000.

Disclaimer: Don't blame me when you lock yourself out!
You can manually lock an open driver's door on a Honda (and thus all doors on Hondas equipped with power locks) simply by holding the inside (or outside, but that's awkward) door handle open while moving the manual lock. The door will be locked and you can then close the door. But be careful... I learned how to do this in one quick routine motion on my CRX (no remote entry) and occasionally locked myself out. This mechanism has worked on all Hondas we've had in the family, including the S2000. It can be handy at times.

Be careful with remote entry.
On all Hondas equipped with remote entry that I've had experience with, the doors will 'auto-lock' if the unlock button is pushed AND a door is not opened within a specific period of time (something like 30 seconds). Based on my experience with my '98 Civic coupe and our '00 Si, a door can include the passenger door AND the door being opened and closed will disable the auto-lock.

This is not the case on the S2000 (at least my '05).
I managed to lock my keys in the car one day assuming that opening the passenger door would disable the auto-lock. This is what happened.
- The car was locked and parked in the garage.
- I used my keys to lock the door to the house.
- I used the fob to pop the trunk, where I placed my brief case, which included my cell phone (this is important).
- I proceeded to unlock both doors by pressing the unlock button twice. I then opened the passenger door, placed several items on the passenger seat (including my keys), and then I closed the passenger door - all within 30 seconds of unlocking the doors.
- I then went to move some ramps that had been placed behind the car, and that's when I heard the doors auto-lock.

So, my keys were locked in the car, my spare keys were locked in the house, and my cell phone was locked in the car.

That evening, I tested and compared all combinations of actions between my '98 Civic and my '05 S2000. I learned that:
- With no doors being opened, both cars auto-lock at about 30 seconds after the last press of the unlock button on the fob.
- Just opening the driver's door on either car disables the auto-lock.
- Just opening the passenger door on the Civic disables the auto-lock.
- Simply opening the passenger door on the S2000 does not necessarily disable the auto-lock. The door must be open at the 30-second mark in order to disable the auto-lock. Opening and closing the door within the 30-second window allows for the doors to lock again and leaves an opportunity to place the keys in the car.

Needless to say, I won't make the mistake again.

Excellent post 00CivicSi. I have also been burned by the auto-lock. One time I accidentally locked my keys in the trunk too, and the top was down, so I figured no big deal, but the centre console was locked. I have to pry the edge of the console open and use a coat hanger to push the trunk button.

What I've learned:
Be careful with your S2k keys! They are a lot easier to lock in the car then you'd think!
