Default Notchy '02 Shifter?

Is anyone else experiencing a notchy shifter for the 02 models or is this common across all S2Ks? It naturally gets better once the car is warmed up but I still get some notchiness (is that a real word?) when going into gear.

It is very normal..... Nature of the S2K shifter. Very mechanical feeling. Gets better when car is warm..

I test drove a 2001 S2000 and experienced some notchy shifting. I later that week drove an 02' model and it shifted smoothly. They changed the transmission in the 02's to help the feel. My guess is your car has still fairly low miles on it and is probably a little tight at the moment. With time and miles it might smoothen out. My 2 cents!!

My '02 is very notchy betwen 5th and 6th. A few times I've fluffed the change up and found myself in 4th or even in neutral. When it goes into neutral, it proves difficult to get back into gear and I've had to waggle it around praying that I haven't dropped it into 2nd when I let the clutch out. However, the car's only done 1600miles, so I'm hoping it will ease with more use.

So I take it that it's a little notchy on occasion, even after it's warmed up. The quick shifts seem to be fine but it's the slower, gentler shifts that seem to make it more pronounced. Still breaking her in. My Integra however was butter smooth from day one. I'll just drive her a couple thousand miles and see if that changes.

Anyone else notice this? Thx for the responses so far.

my '02 is notchy from 1st->2nd, and then from 2nd->3rd...but it gets really buttery smooth once the tranny is warmed up. also, if i hesitate a sec between 2nd and 3rd for the upshift...like in 2nd, go into neutral, wait a sec, go into 3rd, the notchiness disappears. this was a tip from a fellow s2ki board member and it works great.

but when i just start the car and start driving first thing in the morning, the tranny is very stiff and notchy...maybe the tranny fluid hasn't had time to go thru the entire tranny? i dunno, i have no clue why... if someone could explain this to me, i'd be greatful!!!

mwy23, I'll try that pause method and see if that helps any.

As far as cold starts, just like the motor, the tranny will need warming up to work smoothly. Parts expand, fluids warm up and allow better movement.

My concern was after it had warmed up. Maybe it's because of the synchros. Higher performance cars tend to have gearboxes that show those characteristics I suppose. Race cars have straight cut gears and are even more finnicky which require quicker shifts.
