Default notchy 2nd gear and double clutch

New 05 ap2 owner, I ran into the notoriously notchy 2nd gear, tried double clutching about 7 minute into driving and notice a improvement into shifting into 2nd and 3rd gear w/o the notchiness. not sure why it helped, can anyone explain this? any downside to double clutching in ap2? Thx

I am not sure why double clutching helps the gears drop in so smooth, but i have the same thing on my car. Its not the synchros because at high rpms all gears go in like butter. Also when downgearing (most stress full on the synchros) all gears also work perfectly. Its really just those low rpm shifts that have a bit of a knotch, especially when the car is cold. I would not worry about it, as i believe its part of the design of the car.

thx for the info guys, yeah, i figure sychro should be good otherwise notch would happen when shiftying into all gears since after 3rd gear, everything goes in perfectly w/o d.c.

i'll just continue driving this way til my fluid change...car's only got 12k miles so far so hopefully new fluid will work its wonder.

The only reason it would help upshifts is because it takes longer. Between 2nd and 3rd, the rpms have to drop, and double clutching slows the shift down enough to allow this to happen.

A little knotchyness is normal, but I've heard that different transmission oils can help.

Double clutching is really only needed on an down-shift, not an up. Its something like:
down clutch, 3rd to neutral, up clutch, blip throttle, down clutch, neutral to 2nd, up clutch.

I agree. Different transmission lube might help, but the sure fix could be as simple as a change in shift timing. When you short shift, you have to alter (slow) your shift timing.

Because after 7 minutes into the trip, the transmission is warmed up.

The shift timing also has to be slowed when the transmission is cold.

I always granny shift on the first 5 min of driving from 1st to 2nd. Say about 2 second shift when shifting 1st to 2nd and it goes in smoooooooooothhhh... hehe
3rd-6th are always perfect shift w/o notchyness for some reason which is cool.

Yeah, 2nd/3rd shift poorly when cold, but go in nicely when warmed up. Just take it easy and or double clutch till the transmission is warm.
