what memory cards are you Hero4 guys using? my gf bought me a Black Edition for Xmas 2014. i never could get it to work properly. it keeps freezing. it turned on and worked less than a handful of times before the controls would just lock up.

i thought it a defective unit, so i got a warranty exchange replacement. that one wouldn't work consistently either. i spent several hundred $$$ on various memory cards (all top of the line and different manufacturers), but still no go. i've missed out on filming countless roadtrips, incl some once in a lifetime ones to Utah/Wyoming/Montana/Yellowstone/Mount Rushmore, New England (Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Maine, Vermont), and Cali/Arizona/New Mexico. i just got back from Hawaii, and it would have been nice to have filmed some of the drives and beach/ocean outings.

basically, i have an uber expensive paperweight now.

Have you tried updating firmware? In my experience the cards listed on GoPro's site are the ONLY ones to use. I've tried cheap cards from different manufacturers and the listed supported cards are much faster and efficient.

thanks for the replies. i've tried literally 10+ different 32-64gb Sandisk Ultra/Extreme, Samsung, Sony, and Kingston cards. many are on GoPro's list of "recommended" ones. none have worked for more than a few minutes.

95% of the time, the camera turns on and then just locks up (w/out even recording). the controls are non-responsive, and then i have to do a reset, but it just keeps freezing. i have tried updating the firmware, using the GoPro Android app, but still no luck. it's really frustrating, esp since my gf thinks they i haven't been using it because i don't like it. i bought a few hundred $$$ in accessories too, so I've wasted like $1000+ on the camera, cards, & extras.

i'm stumped too. i've spent numerous hours trying different things, incl troubleshooting tips from GoPro. much that was done during my trips too. i pretty much gave up on the thing, but seeing this thread makes me want to try and salvage it somehow. i'll try contacting GoPro again, but not looking forward to going through the whole process another time. my Hero4 is out of warranty now too, which is even more frustrating because neither my original or warranty replacement worked right.

Not that I'm condoning this practice but, you could always buy a new one at Best Buy and return the defective one.

Right? I mean, if your company has terrible customer service... You're asking for it.

thanks for the additional suggestions. i did think of that the first time, as going through Customer Support and submitting a warranty claim is a real pain. they were actually pretty good about it, but the whole process is tedious.

anyways, problem w/trying to get around the system is that the units have serial numbers on them.
