oh uh...too much engine oil?

Default oh uh...too much engine oil?

i checked the engine oil last night and notice that it's really close to the L mark....so following the manual i add about half a quart of oil.....

after 20 min i recheck the dipstick level....it's one mark above the upper H mark....so now i'm worried that i add too much oil ...and the manual says overfilled could damage your engine....

so could someone explain why overfill could damage the engine?.....should i just let the oil sunk in for a couple days before i start driving again?

The only accurate way I know of to check the oil is after the s has sat for a few hours (over night). This engine is known to hold oil in the "top" of the engine after you shut it off. Best to check the oil first thing in the AM before you start it up. Remember, this engine holds 5.1 quarts so if it is one quart low, you still have 4.1 quarts in there. Also, the sensor will not let you rev over 6K if the oil is too low (like when the engine has not warmed up). Just check the oil after it has sat for a couple of hours......

If you overfill the engine oil, the oil starts to froth when the engine runs. Froth = air, which cannot be compressed well - I believe that is what causes engine damage due to overfilling. Someone please correct me if I am wrong.

Check the oil after the car has been sitting for some time. If it is still high, perhaps you need to drain some oil.

I just make sure there is 5 litres when I change my engine oil ... Between oil changes, I just check the oil levels ... Never need to fill it up since my intervals are 2500KMs anyway. But the reading is somewhat inaccurate ... My car is rarely driven and I take oil readings when I warm up the car before I head off usually.

Sometimes, I get a low reading and sometimes I get a normal middle leverage and sometimes above high. So, I've determined from experience and confirmation from my trusty Honda Mechanic with 20 years or so of Honda F1 tuning and servicing experience ... Just keep checking a few times round and the number of repeated times of a sequence should show something close. I'm afraid there is no accurate way of determining so unless you drain it all out and measure it then. Fact is, that's what it is ... Nothing else comes close.

I think the engine actually holds 5.5 quarts, even though the instruction manual says 5.1.

Moneeb and Jay both have it correct. As long as you can see oil on the dipstick, you can VTEC, and there are no bubbles in your oil (assuming it is not black...hehe) you're fine.

Also be sure you look at both sides of the dipstick, and take the lower reading (this advice is from Woodwork, our lurking Honda rep).
