Oil change: Did I get screwed?
Just got my oil changed today, and I payed $56.00. Is this about right? They used 5w 30 Valvoline Synpower. Also some charges for filter and labor. Just wanted to ask you guys to get this topic straightened out. Sorry if its a no brainer but i'm fairly new to the S2000. Also, does syn, oil require a 3,000 mile change?
Thanks,
Greg

$34-something at my dealer, which is including all taxes and fees.
Your vehicle should not be running synthetic until roughly 10,000 miles. It's clearly stated in the manual. I guess your oil change was so pricey because they filled the car with synthetic instead of dino oil.
If "Synpower" is synthetic, (my guess is that it is) then the dealer filled your car with the "wrong" oil. If it were me, I'd take the car back to the dealer and point out the error and have them fix the problem and credit me back the difference between the regular and synthetic oil.
What I'd get back from them is another story.
Anyhow, it's still worth a call to the service manager to check it out.

For a synthetic oil change, $56.00 is about right. But they put the wrong oil in your car. You should be using 10W30, even if it is synthetic. IMO you probably aren't going to do any damage, but 5W30 is a little less viscous than 10W30. Others will probably disagree with me. If it were winter up in Canada, then I'd say it's fine. But summer in the Carolinas is warm, and you don't need the reduced viscocity; you need the protection when you Vtec.
As for the oil change intervals, you will get different opinions. Personally, I wouldn't change your oil less often with synthetic. The whole idea is to reduce wear on the engine. True, your oil breaks down slower with synthetic and most particulates are removed with the filter but you're building up acids as well. I'd stick to 3000 miles.

I don't think the synthetic will cause any harm, the engine burns a bit of oil until everything wears in and the synthetic will just delay that. Others here know more about that than me.

Go out and buy Mobil 1 10w30 or 5w30 at a discount type store like Costco. it should be around $23.00 for a box. take it to the Honda dealer near you and they should only charge you around $18.00 for parts and labor. total cost $41.00.
$34.00 is for dino oil not Synthetic.
I am guessing that you are over the 10,000 mile mark because your sig shows a MY01.

5w30 synthetic would not cause me to swap out for 10w30 synthetic...but if the engine calls for 10w30 mineral through break-in mileage, that is what it should have.
5w30 is only less viscous than 10w30 at low temps, which is what you want - at 100degF they are effectively the same.
