An interesting thing about the topic of changing the oil in the 06 owner's manual is that the manual does not mention mileage intervals at all. All it says is to go by the oil life indicator. Of course, one owner might want to change the oil at 40% remaining, another at 10% life remaining, so it's still a matter of personal taste.

So far it seems mine is going on a solid ~5k miles interval. I waited on the first change for the break in oil until 15% where it will come on every time you start the car. Therefore I assume it wants you to change the oil at 15%. I am going to do 3750mi changes from now on as I have no indication that this meter is based on anything else.

i have 2500 miles and indicator shows 70%. the oil still looks new.
of course, i will still check and change the oil by my own eyeballs.

i just check the oil reguarly and like to change it when it goes dark brown.

Does anyone believe that the oil life varies according to each driver's driving habits? Or is this indicator simply a fancy maintenance light that goes purely by mileage?

Yes.

I don't really know. On the early cars the only thing that is measured is the mileage since the reminder was reset, but the newer cars seem to have a more sophistocated system.

Mercedes Benz has a system that actually does some kind of analysis on the oil and informs the owner when it needs to be changed, but I don't have a good feel for how it works.
