The oil life indicator

Does anyone believe that the oil life varies according to each driver's driving habits? Or is this indicator simply a fancy maintenance light that goes purely by mileage?
8. Maintenance minder system. The previous Maintenance Req'd light has been replaced with a new system. Oil life is calculated based on RPM's and operation conditions to determine oil change intervals.
So yeah, its a bit more advanced then just coming on ever 5k miles... for example.. mine came on way early (3800ish).. because i tent to drive alittle more spirited than my friend whos came on at 5500ish..

Mercedes Benz FSS (Flexible Service System) determines the remaining time and mileage before the next oil change is due. This information is displayed in the instrument cluster. Both, V6 and V8, engines are fitted with a digital oil quality sensor on the bottom of the engine's crankcase just above the oil pan and an analog oil level sensor. The maintenance interval is increased or shortened depending on the operating conditions (cold starts, engine speed, etc.) or when oil has been added. The distance between service requirements with systhetic oil for your vehicle may be lengthened beyond the new 10,000 mile minimum service interval without sacrificing the quality or performance you expect. FSS monitors oil change requirements based on actual needs. FSS calculates the current remaining mileage and remaining operating time up to the next oil change based on the following information:
Time (from vehicle's clock in cluster)
Speed (from ABS/4ETS control system module via CAN)
Coolant temperature
Load signal
Eingine rpm (from engine control module via CAN)
Engine oil temperature
Engine oil correction factor
Engine oil level (from analog oil level sensor via engine control module and CAN)
Mercedes Benz FSS system is similar with BMW, Porsch, Audi ... and all of them requires synthetic oils to have extended oil change interval up to 20k miles. Honda oil minder is designed for conventional oils, if you use synthetic oil you may not need to change it when the oil minder goes down to zero, you can extend OCI several thousands miles.
