Oil spill in engine bay! How to clean up?
Get ready for a good laugh because I did something really stupid today...
I was driving around all day today and kept smelling oil coming through the air conditioning. Well, my oil was low yesterday and I topped off, so I figured maybe I overfilled a little and that was why it was smelling.
It kept getting worse and worse, so finally I came home and looked under the hood.... YIKES! I forgot to put the oil cap back on!!!
And amazingly, it was still there, upside down on the valve cover after some hard driving. Even more amazingly, the hood was not dented because of the oil cap (I had read about someone else doing this).
It is obvious that oil splattered up all over that part of the engine, and there is a dark spot of oil on the cloth-like under-hood layer. The spot is about 1 foot in diameter.
I tried wiping down as much oil as I could, but I know that oil does not just evaporate. Is there some sort of solvent (like WD-40) I can spray in there to clean off the engine and the under-hood film? How do I clean up this mess? Thanks in advance for all suggestions.
