It is full with 5W30 Mobil-1 that has less than 1000 miles on it. I think I will go ahead and change to conventional oil just to rule that whole avenue out, although it makes no sense to me. But it does seem that it could be VTEC related in that it is only at high rpm, has no roughness associated, and can occur multiple times (on and off) in one run from 6K to 9K.

As I recall, you use Techron once in a while, so clogged or dirty injectors wouldn't be a problem?

Yes, Tried Techron the first time it happened a couple of months ago.

Went through the VTEC valve checkout today. The resistance is within spec (18 ohms, with normal being 14

Chris,
I believe a former owner (frayed) had the same problem with intermittent VTEC engagement. He said the problem was the MAP sensor. He had the MAP sensor replaced & the problem was solved.

Thanks for the responses.. I looked at the manual and your suggestions and have to admit, the MAP sensor sure looks like a possibility, especially when someone else had a similar problem. Now the only question is how do I get the dealership to accept the input?

This car and the Honda organization are certainly more of a challenge than I ever anticipated.
