Should I purchase a hardtop when ordering a new S2000 for cost and paint matching reasons?
I asked a local dealership if the hardtop was painted at the factory where the S2000 is manufactured? The dealership sales rep had no idea?
I am not sure if the hard top is shipped on the car and both imported, or if each local Honda dealer orders an unpainted hardtop and has a local paint shop spray it? If the tops are just painted locally, then I don't see any why I can't purchase it down the road. Is the purchase of a hardtop cheaper at initial point of purchase?
you can buy hardtops online, from vendors such as www.handaaccessories.com or even kingmotorsports if you want mugen hardtop. I would assume the dealer would charge you more.
I bought mine ('02) at the same time as the car. At the time, discounts weren't too common yet, so buying it all at the same time resulted in more negotiating power. I got the top installed for $2600 - still a good deal today.
Here's a quote from HardTopGuy's site:
The top weighs 44lbs and is made out of aluminum with a glass rear window with defogger. Fully trimmed black interior. Manufactured at the same factory as the S2000 and painted to match with the same paint and process.
If you don't get it from your dealer for about $2600 installed, then buy it from HardTopGuy (board sponsor). He's got the best prices on anything S2000.
The only issue I might be concerned about regarding paint is waiting a couple years to buy it. By then the paint may have faded a bit on the car, resulting in a mismatch.
i love mine. i purchased it from an owner who had the hardtop installed. he got it done at the dealer. im assuming its all oem, because he knows nothing about the car except that he was scared to sell it to me.
when i get my S, i plan on just having them do one up for me when i buy the car. as stated, that way the paints will be a perfect match. also, that way i can just tack the hardtop on with the loan and it's one less thing to worry about paying for.
**insert cool picture of a GPW with a hardtop here**

yea, tack it onto the loan so you'll be paying more monthy... for another 2-3years.. I'd rather wait and save the cash.

yeah, like i said.. tack it on to the loan. it'll add what, 50 bucks a month? small potatoes when you're talking about a $30,000 loan, don't you think? and besides, some people aren't good at saving money.. and i'd rather save my money for things that can't be added to a loan.. like an exhaust.. intake.. etc.
