Over-revving worries
My S2000 can stand smacking the rev limiter for at least 2-3 seconds per lap (right before a turn...no time to shift to 4th, then downshift 2 seconds later) for at least an entire weekend.
The only over-reving issues to worry about are the 5th down to 2nd at 90mph...... usually those get flatbedded home.

Your car sounds really new, dwheatley. Welcome aboard, but are you following Honda's directions to get over 600 miles on the car before VTECing?
I'm not going to try to defend that recommendation, only to say that's what mother Honda recommends.

I've done the break in thing. I'm at 1,500 miles now... It was a combination of traffic, the radio and my stupidity that was to blame! On the bright side, I've never miss-shifted (at least, not down). The first time I hit the VTEC I over-revved too... I wasn't expecting it to fly through that last 2k of revs! It's such a pitty that the VTEC doesn't kick in earlier!
...yes, this is my first manual tranny car. I passed my test in England with a manual but never actually drove one until I bought Betty six years later in NC! I must say that despite the odd clunky feel on the gears when she's cold, I absoluely adore this car. It's everything a sports car should be.

Dean

Dean,
Watch your terminology. Over-revving is only possible on a downshift. You really don't want to over-rev the engine; it can cause mechanical damage.
Hitting the rev limiter prevents over-revving, and it's absolutely critical. I've bounced my car off the rev limiter a couple of times during highway entrances when I'm concentrating more on oncoming traffic than shifting. The sag you feel is protecting your engine.
Try to imagine a carbeurated car with an engine like the S2000, and then realize that we'd all be blowing those engines by making over-rev mistakes. That's the reason most older drivers (like myself) are very wary about driving at the redline initially. Thank god (or Honda in this case
) for engine electronics!!

I hit the rev limiter the other day. This is the first time in this S2K. I was at a stoplight that turns left and immediately goes to the right around a corner into a straightaway. A Jetta GL pulled up beside me and revved his engine like he was trying to race me from the stoplight.
As the light turned green, I was steadily increasing speed in first gear from the start, but I didn't nail it because of the two quick turns (didn't want to lose control). As he was gunning it in 2nd around the right-hand corner, I was beginning to accelerate more and hit the rev limiter. I immediately hit 2nd and blew him away. No damage done, and I shifted quickly.
At the next light, he pulled up to me and rolled down his window and said, "Man, that car is quick."
I said, "that was only first gear at 9K RPM's."
I didn't start aggressively (slow start at light), and I never floored it until I hit second, so he didn't even get what the S2K is capable of!
I have no idea why he wanted or tried to race me in his Jetta. Maybe he thought I had a Miata.
