Default Please don't laugh- what's the best way to put it in reverse?

I know my questions are those of a noob but I'd rather be sure I'm shifting correctly than to be doing it wrong for a long time.

My question concerns putting it in reverse: when do you push the shifter down, after you shift it to the right side of neutral or before you shift it to the right side of neutral?

I have studied the owner's manual but it is unclear; the diagram shows that you first push it down, then move right, but the text clearly says that you move the shifter to the right, and then push it down.

So, how do you guys shift into reverse?

I don't believe it matters. As long as the shifter is along the left-right centerline, you haven't yet engaged any specific linkage. Personally, I push down before I move the shifter, but I suppose it's just because of habit. If you want to slide it right, then press down before shifting down, there shouldn't be an issue with it, other than it miht feel wierd.

Also, make sure you're stopped. No synchros for reverse!

This is a trick answer.

1) The other posters are right
2) The other posters are wrong

Huh?!

The absolute best way on nearly every car in the world is this (assuming you are going from 1st to reverse, such as when parking.

1) Stop the car completely
2) Shift from 1st to neutral
3) Let up on clutch
4) Depress clutch pedal
5) Shift into reverse

Push the shift knob down (with the clutch in and the shifter in netural), then slide it into reverse. Be consistant. That way you can shift into reverse properly without thinking about it as a matter of habit.
